Question for here:

What are some affordable audio books production options for someone who:

  1. Does NOT want to use AI narration
  2. Does not want to be locked into ACX
    and
  3. Does not have the equipment or know how to do it herself.
  4. Writes science fiction & fantasy novels

@LJ Hmmm... production only, or are you also seeking voice talent?
Managing the sound, there are freelancers out there. The most experienced podcast producer I know personally is Ross Payton, but I don't think he's on Masto. You have a Bluesky account?

@GregStolze I don't have a bluesky account. And I'm probably looking for both narration and production.

@LJ Was ACX the one that had sort of a marketplace for voice talent? You might be able to find someone there without it being the full ACX Devil's Pact...

@GregStolze yup. I think from what I read that if you pay outright for voice talent, you can pull out of being exclusive with them after 90 days or so.

@LJ Hmph. There has to be a better way to find VO talent... @AlasdairStuart , you know, like, a legion of voice talent, yeh? Any thoughts on finding a budget audiobook reader without ACX?

@GregStolze @LJ Yeah! Couple of ideas.

These folks are good.

And this discord is slightly wild west-y but there are some useful elements

@LJ @GregStolze No problem at all! Happy to introduce you to the folks I know who are much better at this side of things than me if it'll help.

@LJ

No. There isn't.

I've kept an eye on how to create audiobooks, and the only option that I saw was Findaway Voices, still very expensive. My books do not bring in enough to pay for that.

That option died when FA was acquired by Spotify last year. Now their Terms of Service are not acceptable.

Can't do it myself, either.

I've turned to Google AI, in some desperation, and I am not truly happy about it. Narrators deserve to be paid.
