What I wanted from AI: hundreds of robot servants to automate away all my stupid, repetitive tasks, leaving me free to pursue the life of the mind.

What I expected from AI: self-driving cars maybe, at some point.

What I got from AI: a wrong-answer machine which steals money from me and is powered by burning the rainforest.

Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

I was a stay-at-home dad for decades and it is very HARD, but it is not usually COMPLICATED.

Like a marathon: Are there better ways to run and breathe and prep? Sure, but plenty of people could know that in the brain and still not run 26 miles. The key is not knowledge, it's just continuing to put one foot in front of the other.

So there's a lot of kvetching, from myself included, about how the modern internet has gotten worse, usually due to a combination of SEO, social media gone evil, and the prevalence of money as more and more of a guiding factor in tech.

But of course the old internet had the problem of being fairly boring. The interesting question is how to get a third way. I've heard a few proposals:

Thank the lord for Tish James. If you look at the research she did into this bond it made my head spin and I'm a math teacher. She understands all of these fancy finance games, and I guess you'd need to do her job in NYC. We have the worst/best "banking wizards" sometimes they break the laws of physics, sometimes they just break laws.

This bond is a stinker. I wonder what Trump promised the guy to let his company implode as sacrifice to avoid the full fee?

Anyone else just... not particularly moved by travel? I don't necessarily dislike travel, but keeping a garden and a library is my preference 99% of the time. I find most travel stressful and disruptive, and I mostly do it to support books or see family.

I still wonder in amazement how we (Americans) came out in record numbers during the summer of 2020 to protest police violence and nothing changed at all. Scratch that; things got quantifiably worse.

Police got more money and also killed a record number of Americans in the following years.

People aren't panicking over police impunity/climate change/incipient fascism/mass shootings? It sucks.
