This article seems a couple of years too old. Front-ends are thinning again with tech like HTMX, computation is more and more outsourced to remote execution contexts like cloud or edge; and on the other side of the industry we feel another push towards decentralization and offline-first computing. PWAs are like an awkward middle-ground.
Bluesky requires an invite. There’s a waitlist. All of the content creators I followed didn’t go to Mastodon, they went to Bluesky, and I can’t follow them because I can’t make an account.
I don’t want to be on twitter, the same way I didn’t want to be on reddit, but all the alternatives are hacky and gimmicky or limited in different ways.
Even Lemmy has huge drawbacks. Basic moderation tools are not available, the instances go down due to attacks, there’s basically nobody really here, and if I go and look at my front page it’s pretty much the same dozen or so posters across all the instances, which I would argue is just as bad as powerusers on reddit. In terms of regular users and general day-to-day, there’s only so many conversations about Linux distros and Communism that I can have before it just starts getting repetitive and annoying.
I am on Bluesky and, to be honest, it's pretty boring. There's another app called WireMin; it's a decentralized social network. They do need to work on real-time notifications, but at least they have chat rooms, referred to as "chat space," for users to discuss. And the staff post daily jokes in their official chat space, so it's not as boring to me as Bluesky.
I have to admit, I never used Twitter much. The changes that made it impossible to use without logging in were the final straw. The availability of local Mastodon groups and the accessibility through KBin have basically rendered it valueless.
At first I tried Mastodon - it’s fine, but something seemed off to me, it wasn’t quite what I was looking for - then some offered me an invite to Bluesky, which has it’s faults but it was a much better fit.
I just couldn’t carry on using that hellsite in all good conscience.
… okay, now I want to see some polling on how likely this actually is to happen.
I mean, people understand what bluster is and how it relates to image, right? These are not two randos in some bar, they’re tech moguls. Ostensibly smart people. They care about their bank accounts, and ways to grow them. Fighting a cage match would not help that. Talking about fighting one would help that.
Sorry but any site that ublock flags is a no-go and most likely a scam.
Even without that, this sounds dodgy as hell. My guess is it will be filled with content stolen from other sites by people hoping to get paid for other's work.
Pass.
Edit: The domain name sjv.io is owned by impact radius a French marketing firm.
I wonder how this will impact their profits; or if it will. With GDPR, a lot of American businesses shut off access from EU country IPs, and refused access to anyone who represented themselves as a citizen of an EU nation. Facebook, Instagram, and Threads may be the next services to go dark in Europe, if the money just isn't there.
