It only just now occurred to me that the song My Favorite Things is about dissociation. I wonder if that’s why it resonated so much with Coltrane.

@mrcompletely Hm, the premise of the lyric is “when something unpleasant happens, I simply think about a pleasant thing instead, and then I don’t feel so bad.” It’s pretty straightforward. No part of it talks about other ways of handling bad feelings. As far as Coltrane, I was stretching a bit. He constantly searched for new ways of expressing the inexpressible, and that led him to various drugs and religious thought. I wondered if he struggled with quotidian “reality” and pain.
