Oh, so like shitty AI translated anime on Crunchyroll, but for manga. 19 million dollars series A investment to flood the market with mistranslations?!

They claim that a translator is going to do a double check, but at that speed that they promise, very sus.

This AI boom is getting annoying

And when they don't sell they will say there is not market for manga, not that there is no market for crap.

@anianimalsmoe Glad I haven't really been collecting manga these past few years. Hopefully fan translation groups don't give up...

@anianimalsmoe You can see why I only read manga in Japanese. No AI bullcrap.

It's not like the translations wih AI is going to be good, as Japanese is a hard language to translate stuff accurate and machine translators are never that great with Japanese to English.

@chikorita157 @anianimalsmoe Swedish and English is quite close and it still won’t work well.

I think because a good translation for fiction needs to be creative, not generative. It can’t draw from a table of potential options as it misses the cultural aspects for instance.

It’s not that a lot of these algorithms are useless, it’s that someone is hellbent on cutting staff.

Wish I knew Japanese. Only language with a lot of entertainment I want direct access to. Honestly can do without the rest. Which is kind of odd.

@yon @chikorita157
So they claim that AI makes the translator's job easier and faster, just like AI companies claim AI makes artists jobs easier, or AI makes storywriting easier.

Companies just want to pay LESS by underpaying staff, hiring fewer staff, hiring less skilled staff, to cleanup after AI does a first-pass of whatever process they want. See WGA strike 2023.

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 There’s a tipping point where the tools stop helping I think. Like a bell curve.

For instance dictionaries must have helped. Ways to look up cultural aspects as well. Stuff like rhyming dictionaries and thesauruses. Then digital versions instead of paper. Editing on computers instead of however the analog way worked.

But to get a worse translation to fix has got to be more work, if it’s suppose to end up being a good one. Because it’s not grammar/words only, as we know. It’s like translating in jokes basically.

They clearly want to not have staff at all. And I think there’s where the WGA/AGA failed. Because they didn’t want to be copied, when the goal is to remove them all together. U.S. laws won’t matter when it’s all made on some low cost country server park in the end.

While I don’t like bad translations and bad experiences, it’s something I’ve lived with anyways. They always underpaid translators and shitty customer service is pretty much a staple.

What I think is a big proper issue is the further pooling of wealth due to all this. In simplified terms, if we’d taxed AI (and other post scarcity services some made a killing on) and used it for real livable UBI there would be more of a pressure to produce better entertainment (and services and other things).

I mean there’s groups of people who translate manga without getting paid now. If it wasn’t illegal and they didn’t need to live off it I think they would keep doing it. As a hobby.

(Sorry slightly uncoherent. Been some tough months lately:/ Hope the general idea came through.)
