NOT taking into account privacy aspects, what is the best UX experience for individual and group discussions? 🤔

@telegram @signalapp
@matrix
WhatsApp
Other?

baderdean,

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix why the most loved chat app, discord, is missing here? Signal/WhatsApp clear leaders. Element so buggy and IRC-like.

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix Signal. You install, you chat with people you know and who already have signal. Stories are in a specific category, directly written in the menu right to calls. Everything is standard as in every other messaging app, so you don't have to understand new concepts. I do not see how it could be easier to use.

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix Telegram, by far. And I'm a power user of all of them.

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix I really love Signal which improved a lot in term of UX (and because of the very strong privacy) but the truth is Telegram is waaaaaay ahead (all the animations, customization, gestures, the music player !, message preview, folders, group administration, bots integration, ...)
Everything is smooth and responsive ✨
The only thing I hate are the ugly animated emojis, and they load very slowy on 5 year old phone
(and also of course Telegram is less secure)

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix It depends a bit on the OS too… Signal and WhatsApp on Android are vastly superior to their iOS counterparts! (Sure, WA on iOS gets some features first but it’s a clear win when you want to do “just a little bit more”.)

@gael I only use XMPP/Jabber (Gajim & Conversations)

@telegram @signalapp @matrix a Telegram feature I like is its speech to text button, which is super convenient when I cannot easily type

Cdupouy,

@gael

Agree ! And it would be awesome if such program was installed by default on /e/ in parallel with other keyboards.

docalabordage,

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix ça s'execute dans le client ou ça envoie ta voix sur un serveur ? Parce qu'en terme de vie privée c'est pas génial

gael,
@gael@mastodon.social avatar

@docalabordage @telegram @signalapp @matrix by default messages are not e2e encrypted in Telegram, so if they want they can read your messages. So the voice thing doesn't change anything regarding privacy in TG.

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix Element has this really interesting 'space' feature which lets you organize rooms, which Signal do not have. Zith it Element could be used for pro needs (like Slack) and Signal not I think

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix It's hard for a user to separate UX and features. Interesting how this survey on X gave different results.

@gael Probably Discord, TBH.

NOT taking into Account concerns about Privacy and Security while looking for another Messenger is definitely the wrong Way to go, in my humble Opinion. 🙄

So with that Attitude, no Boost from me.

@gael to be meaningful tho, voters should have used all the options, otherwise how do they vote one being better than others in terms of the UX. For example, if one does not even know about Telegram's silent send, scheduled sends, unlimited size broadcast channels, auto-cleanup of media files per chat and group, etc... I suppose tho too it boils down to what each person finds subjectively important to themselves.

julius,

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix
Signal allows to only show all answers to a message which makes it very convenient in larger discussions

@qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social avatar

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix not voting because I've only used 1, but signal works great for 1:1 - small group messages

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix Useful easy to follow discussions are difficult without threads/topics like forums or even email threads. I heard or supports or will support threads but haven't encountered them in any groups yet.

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix hard to choose.
On PC, I really prefer Matrix/Element. Especially since there is this IRC-like display.
On mobile, Element quickly gets unreadable.

So I voted Signal as I write more on mobile, but my votes would be :
Mobile : Signal
PC : Element

(An extra point for video/audio call in Element/Matrix. Signal is not handling this well IMO)

Never tried WhatsApp so cannot judge.

nicoco,

@gael
because it works just fine on old devices, thanks to its lightweight nature, which is in line with /e/'s principles?

@phel@toot.cafe avatar

@gael @telegram @signalapp @matrix I'd argue none of the above, Email with interleaved quoting style! Keeps different topics separated and the relevant responses in context!
