“Twitter reply guys were bad, but Mastodon is no better - localghost”

This is, unfortunately, absolutely correct and, if I get unpleasant reply guys, I have to assume that it’s even worse for people who are of a more targeted group or have more followers https://localghost.dev/blog/twitter-reply-guys-were-bad-but-mastodon-is-no-better/

astrojuanlu,
@astrojuanlu@social.juanlu.space avatar

@baldur It's almost as if the problem is not platforms, but people.

Or almost as if making a "Twitter clone but with CWs" and expect the culture to be completely different from Twitter just because it's Free Software(tm) was completely misguided.

All this is an expectations mismatch. People were promised heaven on Mastodon, hence the grief.

Free Software maximalists should learn to stop overpromising and then when confronted to the reality go full Steve "you're holding it wrong" Jobs.

IOW, everything written about LLMs from the perspective of a single practitioner can be dismissed out of hand. The nature of LLMs makes it impossible to distinguish signal from noise in your own practice

I suggest not even reading these posts. Our brains are unfortunately wired to mistake confident writing for evidence

astrojuanlu,
@astrojuanlu@social.juanlu.space avatar

@glyph @simon @baldur @mms "Wildly overblown" is overly kind to LLMs here. Several energy operators have already said that the current uptake in data centers and energy consumption is delaying their plans to go carbon neutral or directly that the grid cannot hold it.

"Not as bad as crypto" doesn't mean anything.

@glyph @simon @baldur @mms Summary: more gas, private corporations going nuclear (what can possibly go wrong?), energy grids not keeping up. And these were just things that were off the top of my head.

I have more links in my "Tech won't save us" and "Ecoanxiety" Obsidian notes but honestly I'm not bothering keeping up anymore.

The last thing we need now is influential tech people saying that critics are overblowing tech energy consumption.

@astrojuanlu@social.juanlu.space avatar

@glyph @simon @baldur @mms @Mer__edith What evidence would you need to be convinced? Honest question to weigh to what extent am I willing to drop everything else I'm doing and start shooting links, meticulously address your retorts, and spend an unbound amount of time arguing with strangers online, which is known to be among the most unproductive activities ever invented by humankind

@glyph @baldur @simon @mms @Mer__edith Regulation which makes all companies properly account for their externalities would end capitalism as we know it which is why it hasn't been implemented and the reason our planet is going to shit

@xgranade @KevinMarks @simon @baldur @mms @glyph Yes - I'd take anything Altman says with a truck of salt.

And yet, computing now emits more CO2 than aviation worldwide. Not to mention water consumption, biodiversity loss in data center construction sites (ask @tunubesecamirio), etc.

Hey @klove (I don't see Lacey here) do you happen to still have the designs for the "I code like a girl" t-shirt you made in 2015 for @djangogirls ? I think @humitos gave me a pink one which was awesome but I lost a piece of luggage in a trip and I no longer have with me... It was one of my favourite t-shirts, I used to wear it to every conference as well as special days at work 🥹

Peace and love 🩷

astrojuanlu,
@astrojuanlu@social.juanlu.space avatar

So uh whats the profit story for astral.sh. I am not gonna be using any of that shit until I understand what the worst case is for capturing basic python infra. They say "we'll keep making FOSS but sell services on it" but what kind of services can you sell on a linter and package manager that would attract a couple million in VC?

astrojuanlu,
@astrojuanlu@social.juanlu.space avatar

@acdha @jonny Who do you think funds the PSF? Or the GIL removal? Or MyPy?

The Python ecosystem today is only made possible thanks to the most evil Big Tech corporations in the planet and so people freaking out at a specific VC-backed company makes my blood boil to be completely honest.

@drewdevault Freedom 0 means software can be used for exploiting or opressing other human beings, and just for this reason I stopped identifying myself with the Free Software principles a long time ago.

astrojuanlu,
@astrojuanlu@social.juanlu.space avatar

@whynothugo @drewdevault One could contend that the copyleft provisions are also a futile exercise, especially given the fact that the FSF has given up defending the license and the SFC now changed doctrine for good and is using contract law, not copyright law, to litigate.

Futile exercises or people breaching the terms of the license didn't stop the Free Software movement, why should it be a deterrent for these post-F/LOSS movements?
