vexikron, in Challenge to remove Donald Trump from Washington's ballot surfaces in Kitsap County

Given that the last thing I heard making the rounds on the utter insanity that is local conservative talk radio in the PNW was:

“Actually, people who do not live in Seattle, but commute to or through it, should be able to vote in Seattle elections, because the homelessness problem we support with all our other favored policies, should just be made illegal, and that will solve homelessness”

… I am now interested again in following such evil maniacs talking points again, just to hear how insane they are.

jopepa,

It’s weird to keep in mind the ones that get shows are the charismatic ones.

People are getting persecuted for “supporting terrorism” for donating to groups opposing Cop City in Atlanta, but donating to AIPAC is apparently still A-OK.

stoly, in Oregon seafood industry calls on Gov. Tina Kotek to halt offshore wind energy development

So, this tells me that wind farms are a good thing. When an industry group engages in protectionism, I will, by default, take the other side’s position.

lettruthout, in Oregon seafood industry calls on Gov. Tina Kotek to halt offshore wind energy development

That seems counter productive of them. Maybe their fishing area will be reduced, but wouldn’t that give the fish stock more protected area to grow and reproduce, thereby making the fishery more sustainable?

supersquirrel, (edited )

Well, think of it from this perspective.

If the fishing industry is saying it is a Very Bad Idea and making lots of noise about it than there is a high statistical chance the idea is probably a crucial step towards keeping global fish stocks from catastrophically collapsing.

I mean, just check the numbers right? The fishing industry has always said there are enough fish to keep fishing right up until there aren’t any fish to keep fishing, after which point it is kind of irrelevant to admit that there aren’t actually any fish left.

I remember talking to a bottom dragger fisherman (imagine hunting for deer by leveling square kilometers of forest at a time, harvesting the deer and then leaving a wasteland) who claimed there were less fish because we had let cormorant and seal populations “get out of control”. This is somebody who spent their whole lives catching fish, watching fish, learning about fish, learning where to find them at different times… and yet they had convinced themselves a handful of seals and cormorants were the problem not him.

stoly,

My brother likes to hunt and constantly complains about how evil Jay Inslee is because wolves, coyotes, and bears are apparently bad things. It seems that letting nature go back to being natural is a bad thing.

jpreston2005, in Port Hardy-area First Nations declare state of emergency after 11 deaths in two months

His daughter, who struggled with alcohol use, had recently wanted to go to a dry-out centre but was told the wait was between six weeks and six months, he said.

She was among the recent deaths in Tsulquate. “I’ve been in a dark place since,” Walkus said. “There’s no words to describe that emotion.”

Addiction is such that it takes a tremendous amount of courage to even recognize the problem, let alone ask for help. To Finally muster up the conviction to do better for oneself, and to be told to come back later… is a death sentence. They might as well have given her a couple shooters as they turned her away.

shalafi, in U.S. Supreme Court won’t take up WA capital gains tax challenge

Going to start collecting these links for lemmings that think the Court is MAGA and will always rule in the evilest way possible.

Oh look! Just today, Supreme Court refuses to hear trans bathroom bill:

apnews.com/…/supreme-court-transgender-bathrooms-…

In the case the court rejected without comment, the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an order granting transgender boys access to the boys’ bathroom.

I’m no fan of this Court. If I had my druthers, Thomas would be impeached, just for starters. But this idea that these judges are partisan is childish. They’re conservative, not partisan. And apparently they don’t default to hearing cases and judging conservatively.

I would have expected it in King or Snohomish vs Kitsap but not too shocking. If it had come out of Pierce, further south or anywhere east of the mountains that would have been a surprise.

GlitzyArmrest, (edited ) in Six measures Washington conservatives are pushing on 2024 ballots
@GlitzyArmrest@lemmy.world avatar

It’s an audacious plan funded largely by one wealthy businessman — Brian Heywood of Redmond — who has loaned or donated nearly $6 million to gather signatures. The citizen sponsor for the initiatives is state Rep. Jim Walsh (R-Aberdeen), who is also chairman of the Washington State Republican Party.

Classic.

Let’s Go Washington has turned in signature petitions for five of the six proposals ahead of the Dec. 29 deadline:

  • I-2117 to repeal the Climate Commitment Act.
  • I-2109 to roll back the tax on capital gains.
  • I-2111 to ban state and local governments from imposing taxes on income.
  • I-2113 to loosen some restrictions on when law enforcement officers can engage in vehicle pursuits.
  • I-2081 to let parents of public-school children review student records, including disciplinary and health information and curricula, and to allow parents to opt children out of sex education.

So, basically this rich fuck wants to roll back:

  • Our climate change act, likely because it makes companies (including his) actually have to give a shit about their emissions (money).
  • He wants to roll back the capital gains tax that only the top earners in the state have to pay (him and his money).
  • He wants to pass a ban on localities taxing residents (again, him and his money because cities like Seattle have their own higher taxes for top earners)
  • He wants to allow the police to once again cause more danger by chasing people at high speeds (I’m sure the police union has nothing to do with this)
  • He wants kids to not get sex education if their parents don’t want to accept that their children will eventually grow up and have sex (probably in order to provide more bodies in the exploitation machine that he runs)

Seems like a piece of shit, hopefully most don’t make it past the legislature. If they do, I hope that Washington continues to be smart enough to see this guy’s true intentions.

That leaves ballot measures as one of the last potential places for Republicans to exercise power.

Ah, there it is. You mean it isn’t actually to improve the democratic process like he claims?! I’m shocked.

A businessman and member of the LDS church, Heywood said he fled California in 2010 — and moved his 40 employees up to Washington with him — after that state got too progressive for his tastes.

Uh, someone want to tell him?

“Washington has sort of had a reputation of being, even though it’s got lefty Seattle, it was more a libertarian lefty-ism,” he added. “And then I just watched it all happen again here, right?”

Fine, I’ll say it: Washington has always been more leftist than CA, and it’s not just Seattle. It’s pretty much anywhere that has actual population. Tacoma, Everett, Bremerton, Spokane, Bellevue, Bellingham. Even the more rural counties are more left than many of the “left” places in CA.

Branch_Ranch,

Hmmm. A lot of Eastern WA counties voted trump by double digits over Biden. I feel very outnumbered over here even in a mid-size city.

GlitzyArmrest,
@GlitzyArmrest@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I suppose then I’m mostly talking about Western WA. Eastern WA aligns closer with Idaho than with most major cities, including Spokane (although Spokane is obviously more red than the major cities in Western WA).

Branch_Ranch,

True.

I grew up in WA and am now in CA. Not sure that I can fully agree. With the first and last bits (definitely correct about the population centers but missed Oly). I’ve found there to be a lot of performative action (as opposed to substantive action) in WA and there are still significant workplace hostility towards LGBTQ+ people in some places.

kersploosh, (edited ) in Surrey schools a cautionary construction tale as B.C. communities bursting at the seams
@kersploosh@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sounds like the familiar aches and pains of brisk population growth. Private developers can build housing faster than local governments can build schools, fire stations, etc. New residents need services the day they arrive, but they have not yet paid any local taxes to fund those services. Existing residents will have to approve new bond issues and higher taxes to pay for the necessary infrastructure for all the newcomers.

I wonder if BC has their own version of Tim Eyman, making a career of bitching about taxes and foiling infrastructure projects. If not, I’m sure they will soon.
