playing on non-nintendo hardware tastes like coke out of a pepsi bottle or kraft mac and cheese with barilla pasta or something.

@buru5 I think it's better in a lot of ways, mainly with save states and emulator speedup when available. I'm struggling to connect this to your food metaphor, though

@rootcompute it's better from a pure gameplay perspective, absolutely. i think, for me, the inability to transfer pokes to other versions (easily or ahem, officially) and the lack of connectivity to other people is what makes it feel off.

the context here is i plan on playing crystal on my miyoo mini plus and it feels a little weird. i haven't looked much into trading/battling with others on weirdo hardware though, maybe it's possible?

@rootcompute there's also that element of, like, pokemon (+ nintendo) feels like the most DRACONIAN thing in all of gaming; so playing on non-approved hardware feels like the gamer police are going to burst into my home at any moment and confiscate my furret.

@buru5 @rootcompute I dug Pokémon when I played it as an older teen on the Game Boy, but it still felt kinda tedious? I'm more of a hack and slash guy 🤣 but unbeknownst to me, my future wife was loving it on the other side of the country, and my kid who's now 17 has loved it for a lot of years. He plays all of em, still. It's a fantastic cockfighting game. 🤣😂🤣

@jake4480 @buru5

Turn based battles for me are preferable to be honest. I guess I am a weirdo, I don't know many others who agree.

That said I think the strategy involved with certain turn-based games makes them less "tedious" than games that are just, hack away at X number of monsters using the same attacks until you can go to the next area.

Not sure if Pokémon is a great example of this, though. Much more strategy and intrigue with high level human vs. human play than in the singleplayer

@rootcompute @buru5 yeah, Pokémon is definitely turn based and yeah, it does have that JRPG/FF type feel. You're probably a big FF fan huh heheh. That kind of thing isn't my jam personally, the only one of those I could get into was Mystic Quest (the one for babies) but yeah I dug that one a little 🤣 I don't even like Zelda (my wife does) despite loving hack and slash. I do love the look/feel of that first one but it's too damn hard. Make that first Zelda easier, that's my kind of game. Hahaha

@buru5 Yeah I feel you, I guess it's easy for me to forget about connectivity since I pretty much only play the games by myself.

That said I think some emulators can do link play? I remember using some rickety-ass setup with hamachi back in the 2000s lol. I've been eluding the gamer police for decades at this point
