Capitol Protestors: Being put in prison for protesting an election is wrong

Many non violent election protestors are being sent to prison. If you get put in prison for protesting an election, then you don’t have freedom of speech.

If you were violent, then yes, you should be put in prison. But all capitol protestors should not be lumped into one pile where protesting an election is the centerfold issue

borlax,

Lol wut?

mashbooq,

Can you share more information about which nonviolent protestors you’re referring to, which charges they’re being convicted of, and why you don’t think those changes deserve prison?

jordanlund,

Disrupting the legal transition of power is a crime, violent or not. This wasn’t simply protesting an election, it was halting the Constitutionally mandated tabulation of duly selected electors.

And make no mistake about it, the crowd did stop the legal process.

Seriously, how is this bullshit defending fascist traitors who attempted a coup getting upvotes?

jordanlund,

Upvoted so other people can see how wrong they are? :) Sometimes your purpose in life is to be an abject lesson. LOL.

redtea,

The follow-up question is, Does freedom of speech really exist or is it a meaningless slogan?

  • redtea,

I hope you are doing okay. It can’t be easy in Ukraine right now.

I also saw that opposition political parties, particularly the Communists, have been banned. Do you notice this kind of thing in everyday life? Does it affect how people speak about what’s going on?

Does your legend begin in the 12th century?

    From Time (link: time.com/…/jan-6-capitol-riot-arrests-sentences/)

So far, the median prison sentence for the Jan. 6 rioters is 60 days, according to TIME’s calculation of the public records.

An additional 113 rioters have been sentenced to periods of home detention, while most sentences have included fines, community service and probation for low-level offenses like illegally parading or demonstrating in the Capitol, which is a misdemeanor.

Overall these people are getting less time than kids who get caught with some weed on them.

You can think you have rights, or you can know your rights, but when you violate the law don’t be surprised when one of the most pro-incarceration states around throw you in jail. Lots of protesters get arrested and prosecuted as a scare tactic. This is if you are assuming these people didn’t have seditious intentions, which does change things a bit. Overall sounds like they fucked around and found out, at least protesters fighting for real causes are more prepared to get fucked with by the state than these jokers.

  • Uprise42,

The ringleader, the guy who planned the whole thing, who planned to overthrow the government and assassinate members of congress. He got 18 years in prison. If you think that’s egregious then there’s something wrong with you. Frankly that’s not long enough. People died that day. They wanted to kill others. And you think that most people getting a couple months is too much?

    jordanlund,

Technically, the guy who planned it still hasn’t been charged. ;)

    Uprise42,

I was referring to Stewart Rhodes. But I think we’ll be seeing some bigger names in the near future. Fingers crossed for more than 18 years

    jordanlund,

More important when they get convicted of felonies. No more guns, no more voting (depending on the state). That’s going to sting more than a short stay in the pokey.

    Sunforged,

Links to where you are drawing these conclusions from?

    Coherent.

    czech,

Can you pick your favorite one? All the random ones I picked were violent.

    SkybreakerEngineer,

You should try looking up what these “nonviolent protestors” were actually charged for. You may be surprised to learn that there are a lot of really harmful crimes that don’t involve violence.

For example, making plans to overthrow the government is still illegal, even if you don’t show up on the day of (looking at you Enrique)

You might also be surprised to learn how many of the “nonviolent protestors” filmed themselves assaulting cops.

    girl,

  • hypelightfly,

Don't bother clicking the trolls link unless you want to see the sentences of all the violent protesters.

    girl,

So which of these is nonviolent? You brought the claim that nonviolent protestors are being thrown in prison, you should do the work too.

    girl,

I clicked on six at random and all were charged with physical violence. Are you ever going to respond to the many requests to actually provide proof of your claim?

At least the commies put time into their arguments. Every tankie argument is a dozen paragraphs long. Do the work if you want anyone to take you seriously.
