Federation ain't so great for discussion. Here's a toot from a user from the mastodon.social instance. It was boosted by a user on mastodon.gamedev.place, which I'm also on.

If I fetch the descendants (aka replies) for that toot from mastodon.gamedev.place, I see 2.

If I fetch the descendants from mastodon.social, I get ... a gazillion replies.

I understand why it works like that. It's just not great. Folks on mastodon.gamedev.place miss out on a lot of talk.

@badlogic That’s a real problem, especially for small or even single-user instances.

One way to mitigate this is by using tools like Fedifetcher: https://github.com/nanos/FediFetcher

@badlogic I remember when I joined Mastodon and everyone was screaming that the instance was not important 🙄
