Has anyone else out there heard the term “dinlo”, and if you have, could tell me where you’re from.

@DJDarren As a Yorkshire lass, nope. Never heard of it. As someone who lives with her other half between Southampton and Portsmouth, I'm told that yes, this is a real word and it means, "idiot". My other half also thinks the north/south divide starts at Oxford...

@DJDarren @guffo I live in portsmouth

@DJDarren @guffo I love it. Best place I’ve lived

@DJDarren I have heard of it! But I couldn't tell you what it means. From Greater London (Richmond-ish).

@DJDarren Yes. Southampton. It’s full of fuckin dinloes

@DJDarren See also the adjective version “dinny”. Ye dinny cunts.

BlogOfThePops,

@DJDarren Voted yes. Grew up in Southampton but the only place where I've heard a young relative mention the word is - wait for it - Portsmouth. Never ever heard it anywhere else and only once (and that's a long time ago).

@BlogOfThePops Heh, whereabouts in Town did you grow up?

BlogOfThePops,

@DJDarren Bitterne Manor area.

DJDarren,

@BlogOfThePops Ah. My dad grew up there. I’m Hythe through and through.

BlogOfThePops,

@DJDarren Visited Hythe once or twice. Nice area. We moved out to West Totton when I was 16.

DJDarren,

@BlogOfThePops Totton was always a place we went through to get to Southampton. And if we wanted to go up the Asda.

BlogOfThePops,

@DJDarren That was the only place where there was an Asda locally for many years, at least until they obtained a load of ex-Gateway stores such as the one in Southampton centre and at Chandlers Ford.

DJDarren,

@BlogOfThePops I remember Chandlers Ford being a Carrefour. I am old.

BlogOfThePops,

@DJDarren So do I 😀

This fascinates me.

Growing up I assumed that dinlo was just a word people knew. Never occurred to me that it’s pretty much contained south of the M27.

What local words do you have that haven’t made it out of your town?

iolande,

@DJDarren I’m late to the party but “yes, kind of”. I always thought it was dimlo🤔 Southampton

sutchfun,

@DJDarren play up Pompey! 💙

DJDarren,

Strong start to this, and proof that at least two of my followers aren’t from Southampton or Portsmouth.

It’s quite common where I’m from, used instead of “idiot”. Turns out it’s likely got its roots in Romani, which makes sense given our proximity to the New Forest.

But if it is Romani, I’m surprised that it’s not more widespread, what those people’s tendency to, y’know, travel.

sutchfun,

@DJDarren one thing I’ve pondered my whole life, being mixed race and all. “Din-lo” in cantonese also means “idiot” or specifically “crazy man”. What are the chances
