What is Briar. Is it good. How does it compare to e.g. Signal, Telegram

(That is my current scale because I consider Signal "Very Good, But Having Some Interface Frustrations" and Telegram "Radioactive Do Not Touch"

@mcc
Briar is for use in actively hostile situations, it's not pretty, but for it's target use case it checks all the boxes.

It only really makes sense to use when the power grid is down, in a war zone, or for whistle blowers.

I keep the app installed because you can share it via local network, so in a power grid failure situation it could prove useful, but other than that I don't use it.

@mcc I've tried Briar a half dozen times with other free software and privacy folks. It has never worked reasonably well for me in any of its modes. Fully prepared to write it off at this point.

@mcc I've been on the dev list for many years and I wish I could tell you

manolo_ssa,

@mcc You see, Briar is very, very different from Signal or Telegram. The use cases to which it is best suited are not the same as those by which we "measure" the quality of Signal, Telegram, Whatsapp, Wire, Element/Matrix or others. Briar's focus is on building a very specific network of devices that connect to each other directly, without central servers, and which can even connect via Bluetooth, without wifi or internet available. If you're expecting the same features as Signal, Telegram, Whatsapp, Wire, Element/Matrix or others like them, you may be disappointed. But if what you're looking for is an app based on EXTREME security and privacy standards, or on resilience in adverse communication conditions, it could be your alternative.

@manolo_ssa Hm, that's very interesting, but if it doesn't "degrade" to a normal day-to-day communication mode it seems like it might be hard to rapidly set up a friend network if a need for briar suddenly erupts locally
