Ever since @MetalheadDana tooted about the great yesterday, a question is bugging me ever since: how is undisputedly considered where e.g. is not?

The fundamental rule is: it must contain metal riffs.

Does that apply to ? There's not even guitars not to mention any riff?

Don't get me wrong, I love Mirror Reaper and I don't give a 💩 about genres, I was just wondering 🤔

    @MetalheadDana I think so too!

    And apologies for cluttering your notifications, I shouldn't have tagged you especially when asking such a stupid question 🥺

    @derthomas the labels dont matter, but I think they are useful not to correct people, but to explain. How do you describe bell witch without adding something to the funeral doom label. They don't sound like mournful congregation or skepticism so adding "experimental" or "avant garde" to funeral doom is helpful so fans of traditional funeral doom know it's different and more experimental.

    It's not about one upmanship in my mind but explaining to fans who might want to give a listen

    @MetalheadDana that makes sense! And in a genre with so many variations and styles it makes even more sense!

    On the other hand, genre gatekeeping is often done by elitists to disrespect styles they don't like.

    Like: Metalcore is not Metal (unspoken part: because I don't like it)

    The same argument is used for Nu Metal and Hair Metal. That's 100% Metal if you ask me. Mostly crap, but Metal 🤣

    Makes me wonder: why is something less good if it's not Metal?

    @derthomas @MetalheadDana I'm just annoyed by the practice of "micro-genre-ing" to the point where I believe it's just some kind of one-upsmanship and not really a serious endeavor by true music historians to create better understanding of the art.

    I can't tell you how many times a cordial conversation (whether online or in person) quickly devolves into tedium and impoliteness as certain people begin "correcting" those less familiar with some new label.

    @SteveClough I thought about the question "what is metal?" for quite some time and anytime I had a definition I found a band that didn't match the criteria but clearly is metal.
    I wasted too many thoughts on that because as you basically said, it doesn't matter at all.

    @derthomas

    is not considered metal?!?

    At times I get so lost in all these subgenre tags and need to remind me, if I like it, I don’t care what sticker is on it.

    @MetalheadDana

    @AqiDrago @MetalheadDana sounds like Metal to me at least, although I don't really listen to Metalcore.
    But post that on r/metal on reddit and you'll instantly get a shitstorm 🤣
    Metalarchives also hosts some metalcore bands, where the metal part is more dominant (over the hardcore part).

    I’ll try to pay a bit more attention and specifically listen to .

    But man, I’ve come across some really weird metal (sub genres) and hey, if they and the people who love listening to it say it’s metal to them, who are we to be label pushers.

    I’ve not experienced that here… any kind of shitstorm when talking about metal (experiences) which I’m very thankful for.

    @AqiDrago seems like you managed to avoid all the toxic metal sites.
    I never saw this debate in here which tells a lot about this instance: we're a nice bunch 😉

    Ha, I’m not really on any of THE Metal sites.

    I sometimes do a search dive into Reddit for a themed hashtag but I’m not getting involved with any of the discussions.

    Just here, I’ll talk here and I’ve not come across any dickheads yet.

    @AqiDrago @derthomas @MetalheadDana Metal Archives doesn’t consider it metal. I do though

    @HailsandAles @AqiDrago @derthomas @MetalheadDana Read this for the first time just now too. There are over 5000 metalcore bands on metal-archives.com though. This are only the ones that are 'metal' enough for the metal-archives admins?

    Anyhow, some people out there take genres way too seriously.

    derthomas,
    @derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

    @sariash that's basically it. Although they phrase it differently 😄

    And yes, this discussion is ridiculous. I do understand that they intend to have clear rules to keep Metal Archives metal only. But I don't agree with all of the rules, some of them are purely elitist.

    @derthomas @sariash @HailsandAles @AqiDrago @MetalheadDana I remember one gatekeeping argument I saw about what counted as prog rock, where the guy was arguing that all Genesis should be excluded because Phil Collins had done some pop songs!

    derthomas,
    @derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

    @satsuma 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Phil Collins is probably more metal than this person.

    @derthomas @MetalheadDana There’s riffs, they just take a long time to get to and then play slowly over several minutes.

    Seriously

    derthomas,
    @derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

    @troberts @MetalheadDana clearly I need to listen to it again, actively this time.
    I never thought about this when listening to it, I'll especially pay attention to finding riffs next time 😉

    @derthomas @MetalheadDana Around the 30-32 minute mark in Mirror Reaper is where the most obvious melodic section is played. It’s hinted at earlier and repeated later.

    I’m not sure if it fits the technical definition of a “riff” but the whole 83 minute song does have a very defined structure.
