I want a public EVSE with the same user interface as an old parking meter. Coin acceptor, two mechanical flags showing if it's still charging or not.

Make em buy electricity using quarters.

mokomull,

@kwf that's basically what we have. except for each and every quarter I would've put into a parking meter, I now need a unique app installed on my phone.

@mokomull yeah. Somehow parking meters also went the wrong direction

mokomull,

@kwf Seattle seems to have mostly given up maintaining their physical meters...

@kwf If it were permitted in my town, I would steal and implement this idea, to allow my guests -- or anyone, really -- to park curbside or in my driveway and charge their EV.

Alas, the NEC would have me bury conduit for this, and the permit office would likely be too confused for words.

@kwf Anyone visiting my house using an would charge up for free, of course.

@litchralee I'm installing a 50A receptacle on my house for guests. So I hear you there

SpaceLifeForm,

@kwf

I know of parking meters by a courthouse that will only allow you to buy a couple of hours of parking.

Can you imagine: "Your honor, can we take a recess? I need to put more quarters in my car charger"

@kwf
I never understood why every single charge point manufacturer and their aunties need their own very specific app and subscription model.
Meanwhile I can get fuel at every single fuel pump with the same debit card.

@kwf The coin box will have to be extra-large with the rates you have in CA.

@javierk4jh @kwf At last, the use-case for the $1 coin so feverishly desired by the US Mint haha

@kwf should also be more reliable than all the software mess they have today

kwf,
@kwf@social.afront.org avatar

@brunoph seriously. Insert money, dispense energy. This should not be this complicated

brunoph,
@brunoph@breakpoint.cafe avatar

@kwf if you think about it, it’s just a gumball machine for electrons

kwf,
@kwf@social.afront.org avatar

@brunoph do... do you give back the used gumballs?

AMS,

@kwf Power is about dollar an hour for 7.2kW around here.. not a bad idea.
