Mosfet loss calculation can get to a proper science thing.

@thomashauer I watched a fascinating lecture by Sam Ben-Yaakov recently about turn-off losses. It seems the typical Shichman-Hodges models offered by vendors tend to overestimate the turn-off losses by as much as 2x.

thomashauer,

@gsuberland i agree with so many points in that video.
he uses LTSpice there and unfortunately lots of the FET models are poorly made. dont know about the new ones though. those ones who are incorporated in the power switchers though are really well worked out and thought through.

@thomashauer any recommendations on alternatives for power MOSFET simulation? I've mostly just been using LTspice (and NI MultiSim a long time ago) but I'm definitely starting to run into limitations with the off-the-shelf level 1 SPICE models when working on linear stuff and high speed PWM (fast FETs with sub-10ns pulsed operation).

thomashauer,

@gsuberland hmmm so far its the best one I've seen. in some LTSpice user groups there are tipps and tricks for good mosfet models.
there is a new kid on the block though : QSpice (also done my Mike).
haven't tested it though so hard for me to recommend - but i'm sure Mike did a good job on this one. he explained to me the improvements but i'm not a numerics person, so being brutally honest, i have barely a clue what he explained me :D

@thomashauer funnily enough I was trying to take a look at QSpice yesterday but the download page sends you a link by email and the email never arrived >_<

thomashauer,

@gsuberland oh! pity! for me it worked a few weeks back. maybe spam filter?
but, it reminds me to put it back on my todo list and reserve a week or so to play with it.

@thomashauer checked the spam folder and everything, no dice. frustrating that they put it behind an email reg wall like that in the first place.

thomashauer,

@gsuberland yeah its a little odd but they probably want to beef up their email list for future advertisement on their products. ROI is always around ...

@thomashauer aha! some light snooping and... voila! direct download link:
