Today I finally learned about xfe0e, a unicode magic code that tells modern devices to use plain text representation! So now my hearts ♥︎ can finally go back to their stylish style that WRNU and Story-Game veterans remember as my schtick since ages immemorial!
I've been actually typing that same playing card heart this whole time, it's just that modern devices started displaying it as a red heart (🤦🏻♀️) but xfe0e to the rescue I guess!
@Sandra Isn't that a bug in the renderer? BQN suffers from this since it uses the symbol ↕, which browsers has a tendency to render as an emoji even if the emoji variation selector is not included.
(edited) Oh, and will you look at that. It did display as an emoji. Even including it in a code block doesn't fix it: ↕. You need to explicitly pick a non-emoji variation selector to avoid it: ↕︎
No selection is device dependent. So for me, the code block version is non emoji and the non-code block version is emoji. And then the magic xfe0e version is also non emoji just like the code block version.
I agree that the default should be non-emoji. Probably what I would do if I would design a device. 🤷🏻♀️

I'm just reporting what I see which is that on my li'l iPad, the non-codeblock was emoji, the codeblock was not emoji, and the xfe0e was not emoji.
Whereas what you say you saw was that the non-codeblock was emoji, the codeblock was emoji, and the xfe0e was not emoji.
@Sandra hah, yes. I didn't disagree with you. I was hammering the point even harder to the point that not only did the nail go through the board, it shot out the other side and is now in orbit.
Sadly, the people who should be aware of that point are way too in love with their emojis. The closest they should come to making technology decisions is deciding whether the handset on their Fischer Price telephone should be on the hook or not.
