Urban agriculture’s carbon footprint can be worse than that of large farms

Saving on the emissions associated with shipping doesn't guarantee a lower footprint.

@arstechnica There's a LOT more to it than carbon footprint. For instance, there's temperature. Gardens within cities cool down cities. Gardens within cities raise the humidity within cities which can be beneficial to many dryer climates and to many people with skin issues. Gardens within cities encourage bees, insects, and birdlife.

Carbon footprint is not the be-all-end-all of this equation!

@jann
They didn't seem to have studied community gardens exactly, but the large indoor-"garden"-in-a-warehouse.

@jann @timjan @arstechnica Maybe they were expecting people to read the first paragraph of the story before complaining about it.
