Indeed. This is what I believe. Healthy competition is good for everyone. EU got us this hot mess because EU Suits don't understand anything about what they're doing. There is a difference between deciding USB-C is an appropriate standard (good) and meddling with company internal affairs.

objc,
@objc@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian Apple and Google do not compete for developers. I don't know why you believe that. Developers have to develop for both platforms (or, just one, but they are not free to "move" to another platform and take their users with them)

This is not competition. It is a duopoly. We got 15% because Apple got exposed for doing shady back door deals with mega corporations like Amazon, not because they wanted to undercut Google.

apn,

@dimillian It’s Apple who came up with this convoluted, Byzantine mess of a system who is pretty much deliberately antagonizing to users and developers alike but somehow it’s the EU’s fault?

jamesgecko,
@jamesgecko@toot.cafe avatar

@apn @dimillian On the one hand, this is outrageous behavior from Apple. On the other hand, when attempting to regulate a company that historically resists government demands, you’ve gotta be pretty darn sure you’re not leaving any huge gaping loopholes that company could exploit.

apn,

@jamesgecko @dimillian Again - a company does what companies do, which is to exploit loopholes to stifle competition and maximize profits, and people blame the government who tries to regulate them? You people got the whole thing backwards. If anything, Apple needs to be regulated even more cause they’re clearly trying to game the system

dimillian,
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar

@apn @jamesgecko And then you end up with no dev and no software, or shit software.

marcelvoss,
@marcelvoss@chaos.social avatar

@dimillian No, no, no. Don't blame the EU for Apple trying to be snarky and make this as hard, as expensive and as complicated as possible. The EU didn't ask for this, but they asked Apple to open up their ecosystem. Blaming the EU for this hot mess is simply wrong. It's not that complicated on Windows either.

dimillian,
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar

@marcelvoss In the end, there is a reason why the iOS ecosystem is where almost all the “app” value is, don’t you think?

nonproductive,
@nonproductive@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian I’m not in EU, but I thought it was ultimately optional and driven by bigger companies lobbying because they didn’t like paying Apple’s fees?

I would have never made an indie app on top of my job if

  • I had to deal with all this new hot shit.
  • I had to deal with a third-party payment system to receive tips.
  • I had to deal with a bunch of third-party marketplaces with different rules and various levels with nondefinitive and/or well-defined userbase
  • I had to deal with unreliable tooling or lack of fun factor in platform-level tooling.
  • I had to deal with maintaining my own website with a link to download my app.
dimillian,
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar
  • I had to deal with my crash reporting tool.
  • I had to deal with my own system for delivering live push notifications to the end user.
  • I had to deal with my own system to sync user data between devices.
  • And many more.
iKyle,
@iKyle@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian all very good, very true points.

That's why there are no, and never have been any, Mac apps available online.

No indie Windows apps.
No small scale indie Mac apps.

dimillian,
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar

@iKyle All I’m saying is that indie dev on Apple platforms have it easy. I’m not saying having a market and an indie app elsewhere is impossible.

objc,
@objc@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian @iKyle All I'm saying is everything you're complaining about in this scandal doesn't apply to other platforms, and that should set off alarms in your head.

iOS is not special, it doesn't have to be as hard as Apple is making it. Just because it's easy for you doesn't mean it's easy for everyone else. Wouldn't you rather pay even less than 15%? Because with fair competition, 15% would be the MOST you would pay ANYWHERE

mbuchetics,
@mbuchetics@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian you don’t have to deal with it, it’s optional.

emic,

@dimillian Are you making everything a bit too dramatic? Is the life of an Android developer as hellish as you're portraying it? Because Android already allows for much more flexibility than Apple does, even today.

dimillian,
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar

@emic But then why are high-production-value apps first (and often only) on iOS?

objc,
@objc@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian you are falling for Apple's propaganda. This is exactly how they want you to react. They are intentionally making the EU process as obtuse as possible in order to garner support for themselves and to dissuade anyone from even using it. How can you not see that?

jonasschoen,

@dimillian But it will be possible to use the App Store and Apple’s payment system exactly as before, right? In that case developers have more choice, but can still use the “easy” system.

melgu,
@melgu@norden.social avatar

@dimillian The DMA (or at least what Apple thinks is enough to comply) doesn’t go far enough.

dimillian,
@dimillian@mastodon.social avatar

@melgu It's a hot mess designed for smater people to go around.
