Take a moment and consider whether your shoulders are tense for no reason right now. Are they? Relax your shoulders. How about your jaw? Are you clenching your jaw? No need for that. Just try to relax your whole face.

jamesgecko,

@glyph [insert meme here] I’m in this post and I don’t like it.

@thompsonize @NanoRaptor There’s basically no reason for this form factor not to exist again with the M chips. It’s right there, but they chose to make a 15” Air.

Best superpower? You invent...

A: Singleton files. Cannot be copied, only moved. Downloading is possible only while transferred data is erased from server.
B: How to represent 257 distinct states in a byte
C: A logic gate that always outputs the least useful boolean value in any given context

jamesgecko,

@Nifflas A sounds like DRM? Voting for B, as it sounds like it would suddenly give everyone a ton more RAM.

Best superpower? The power of...

A: 50 Wilhelm screams
B: Movies referencing other franchises owned by the same studio

jamesgecko,

@Nifflas It works better in comedies. In Chicken Run 2, around the time you realize this is a Mission Impossible spoof, they introduce animal versions of characters from from Mission Impossible who demand to know why they should participate in this “impossible mission.”

Indeed. This is what I believe. Healthy competition is good for everyone. EU got us this hot mess because EU Suits don't understand anything about what they're doing. There is a difference between deciding USB-C is an appropriate standard (good) and meddling with company internal affairs.

jamesgecko,

@apn @dimillian On the one hand, this is outrageous behavior from Apple. On the other hand, when attempting to regulate a company that historically resists government demands, you’ve gotta be pretty darn sure you’re not leaving any huge gaping loopholes that company could exploit.

A videogame date got postponed, so I sunk an hour into migrating my Twitter follows into Bluesky; wheeled 77 accounts over, in total.

I can't blame anyone who just wants Twitter Again. Mastodon isn't that, can't be, and shouldn't be.

jamesgecko,

Of course Apple is going to support RCS, they literally have to as it’s the replacement for SMS and afaik required for 5G certification. They dragged their feet to try and pretend they weren’t interested, and the people who suffered most were their own customers who got a crap experience.

This is how Apple weaponizes their own users.

But hey, I guess it is one less barrier for me ever considering using an iPhone? 🤷‍♂️ Now let’s do sideloading.

#Apple #iPhone #RCS #Android #iMessage

jamesgecko,

@cassidy Watch as Apple's RCS implementation isn't fully on par with Android because Google is using the exact same blue/green bubble playbook by adding proprietary extensions to the protocol.

jamesgecko,

@cassidy Google isn't working on the standard, that's the problem. RCS is only encrypted if you use it through Google Messages, with other Google Messages users. Apple is the one going through the standards process.

free language learning tip from someone who absolutely 100% has had The Struggle:

take a text that’s somewhat too difficult for you and write it down. Make a copy, by hand. If it’s long just keep going until you run out of time.

You can look up a word here and there if you’re baffled but don’t get sidetracked, keep writing.

edit: copy means identical. no translation. you can make a translation afterwards if you want but the exact copy is the point.

jamesgecko,

@pancake @0xabad1dea Chinese cursive exists and I can’t decide if I love it or am upset that I’ll eventually have to learn it. You can absolutely write sloppily enough that native speakers have trouble reading it.

jamesgecko,

@filippo 1. It's surely an attainable goal to package the entire world without consulting any principle developers or reading their documentation. ;-)
2. I have to assume the reasoning here is that a Google language using Google infrastructure is clearly telemetrying all sorts of privacy violations and must be stopped at all costs.

Working on 's .p64 cartridge files: a simple text format that is git-friendly and human-readable/hackable if needed. .lua & .txt entries are dumped verbatim, and everything else is base64-encoded.

Normally you don't need to interact with them at this level -- inside picotron, the .p64 cart is a logically a folder (you can "cp mycart.p64/gfx/sprites.gfx yourcart.p64/gfx" etc.)

jamesgecko,

@zep Every update this sounds more and more like a real thing! And the format looks super simple to generate as well; feeling more secure in my Neovim habit. Very excited about what must surely be the #1 feature request for the preview version. :D

I wish the GPU teams at Apple nothing but the best - they've made an amazing bit of hardware.

But it can only be "game-changing" if Apple gave a shit about games. And they don't. And they never have.

Maybe a good GPU and a decent HMD can change this? But right now Apple's history means nobody in the game industry trusts them at all. It's going to take a decade of work to undo that damage. And it's going to require going against everything Steve believed in. Not sure Apple can do that.

jamesgecko,

@TomF The sign that would get me to believe that Apple actually cares about gaming is if they drop Valve some dough to (1) update Steam to run as a native application on Apple Silicon and (2) get them to add Porting Kit or CrossOver as an option when launching games, similar to how Linux Steam users can select Proton.

Bonus trust if they eliminate the absurd "two years with no updates == App Store removal" policy and manage to maintain perfect backwards compatibility across major OS versions.

jamesgecko,

@pervognsen I think CrossOver was lagging a bit behind Game Porting Toolkit last I checked? It wasn't possible to implement some important chunks of DirectX 12 on macOS until Metal 3 came along, and Apple had a head start getting it working.

been thinking about this very common git workflow and how git doesn't do much to help you ensure that if you're using this workflow:

a) you never commit to your local main branch directly
b) you regularly pull from origin/main to keep your local main branch up to date

you just need to be careful

branch protection on github/gitlab helps with this, but I don't think there's much in git itself

jamesgecko,

@b0rk I keep waiting for some all-in-one reimplementation with a better UI to catch on, maybe written in a memory safe language.

Also, it’s wild that git doesn’t even provide ANY sort of forge-agnostic mechanism for doing PR reviews. You’d think it would at least have it as a feature hardly anyone used directly because of an impenetrable UI.

(Yes, some of you do not like Tailwind CSS and that's cool, but not the point of my ask, friends.)
