tqbf,

It has been described to me as "a perfect movie" and tonight we will know for sure, as I watch, for first time, John Carpenter's "The Thing”.

todb,

@tqbf yo do you want to watch again, but with jokes?

If so, you’re in luck: @masterpancake is riffing it TONIGHT on Twitch. Local Austin comedy gang. Hella fun.

postmodern,

@tqbf wow how have you never seen John Carpenter's "The Thing" before? That's like never having seen "They Live".

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange avatar

@tqbf I prefer the original 1951 "The Thing From Another World".

tqbf,

Kurt Russell! We're off to a good start.

tqbf,

Ennio Morricone! It's looking more and more likely that I've slept on an American classic.

tqbf,

Gonna go ahead and suspend disbelief about the Antarctic dog.

tqbf,

NOOOOOO wtf

tqbf,

YEAH. That's what you GET.

tqbf,

WILFRED FREAKIN BRIMLEY. This is the greatest movie I have ever seen.

tqbf,

oh my god is one of the characters named Windows? how am i only seeing this now

tqbf,

(a) fuck yes Keith David
(b) why do they have a flame thrower!?

zzywysm,
@zzywysm@hachyderm.io avatar
tqbf,

I see we are in a cinematic universe where it is very normal to find creatures that digest other creatures in order to assume their form, and for Wilfred Brimley to catalog their existence as if it's like the 43rd time he's seen this before.

tqbf,

If this ends without Russell saying "do you want The Things because this is how you get The Things" I will be sorely disappointed.

tqbf,

Does that guy have a nose ring? This is genius.

tqbf,

Ohhhhhh they're in the U.S. Antarctica Research Program, that's why they have flame throwers.

tqbf,

Has Keith David ever not been 49 years old?

tqbf,

I would very much like the source code to this program.

tqbf,

I feel like some of the signs of CJ Craig's dad's incipient dementia were evident even back on his tenure in the Antarctic Research Program.

tqbf,

We can combine contaminated blood with pure blood and see if there's a reaction! SCIENCE

tqbf,

I spend untold tens of thousands of dollars to put my son through school to get a biochemistry degree and am supporting him as he pursues a doctorate in the field and he is fucking explaining to me how the "combine the alien blood with the not alien blood to see if there's a reaction" test is legitimate and problematic only because it's vague and I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

tqbf,

Whoah it's just going to be Among Us The Movie? I couldn't be sold more on this.

dave_cochran,

@tqbf other way around, really

tqbf,

My friend Danny didn't see Star Wars until he was like 23 years old and said that after he saw it so much of pop culture suddenly made sense to him and that's kind of how I feel about the experience I am having with this movie.

tqbf,

The boy and I agree that the hot needle test is invalid, because he isn't starting with a positive control. It's just exploratory data anlysis.

tqbf,

That was amazing.

computerywar,

@tqbf Now the 2011 ‘The Thing’ is actually a prequel that kinda works and weaves the line of being an homage flick while working with both stories fairly well.

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@tqbf so you did sleep on an amazing movie? ;)

But yeah The Thing is... An impressive proof of what can be done. And yep it massively impacted pop culture, especially SFF. Peter Watts has an amazing short story that i strongly recommend based on it. You will love it i think.

tqbf,

@Di4na Yep, Coda already showed me this, and I just finished reading it. Was halfway through before I remembered Watts wrote Blindsight (the only modern sci-fi I've read!).

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@tqbf yeah blindsight is great.

I can recommend Leckie Ancillary serie too. I think you may appreciate it.

sluggard,

@tqbf I’m glad you enjoyed that movie.
We bought a copy so my college age son could host a watch party. The love of that film has hit a new generation

Haven’t been as lucky with “Big Trouble in Little China” or “Escape from New York”

The Thing bombed in theaters —I think at the same time Blade Runner bombed. It made it rough for Carpenter to get funding after that

I also recommend “They Live” (1988). More Keith David in that. Bargain basement, but topical.

tqbf,

@sluggard I've definitely seen and remember "They Live". :)

coda,
@coda@fiasco.social avatar

@tqbf Once you're done with the movie, don't forget to read “The Things" by Peter Watts: https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/watts_01_10/

tqbf,

@coda This is fantastic.

tqbf,

@coda Oh, it's the Blindsight writer. Of course.

durumcrustulum,

@tqbf hehehehehe

tqbf,

@durumcrustulum Chopper is getting a bit Yosemite Sam about the whole thing, it has flipped back to comedy
