davep,

An interesting approach to meat substitutes that has actually scaled. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/11/spanish-startup-cocuus-pamplona-quest-3d-printed-meat-steak

simonzerafa,

@davep

I do something think the whole replica meat thing is misguided or perhaps missing the point?

Maybe we should not look to develop replicas but eat whatever plants and other food sources can offer?

Maybe I'm going old, gray and grumpy? 🥴🤷‍♂️

davep,

@simonzerafa There is merit in both plant-based diets and the meat substitutes. The use of microbial (bacterial/fungal) sources with up to 80% protein and very little in the way of inputs could have a huge impact in reducing the amount of land used for agriculture.

The replica thing is most important for these bland microbial sources, and also for helping avowed carnivores to more readily accept moving away from a meat-based diet.

simonzerafa,

@davep

Absolutely. But why does it have to look like meat?

Why not something different? 🙂🤷‍♂️

davep,

@simonzerafa It can look like whatever you want. The idea of looking and tasting like meat is pretty obvious, really. A lot of people just wouldn't countenance moving to a more plant-based diet.
