#Celtic#FolkloreSunday: The #Cailleach has handed over to #Brigid, yet she is unsettled, and does not sleep. She is struggling to adjust. Meanwhile, Brigid is stirring into wakefulness, taking her time to come to full cosciousness, and into her power. There is turbulence as they slip between roles. We see it in the weather, we feel it in ourselves.

She has been gestating all the activity of burgeoning new life deep underground throughout the long winter. We are ignorant of it because we can only appreciate that which we can see and touch, such as the green shoots of spring bursting out of the ground with the arrival of Brigid. An Cailleach, the pregnant mother, has done her work; now she hands over to Brigid, the foster mother, to rear her offspring.

The Matronae are often depicted as three women seated on a stone bench holding cornucopias, fruits, bread, or an infant. In Ireland, Anu or Danu is the mother of the tribes, and in Wales, Modron or Don, is the mother goddess as "the waters of heaven" (Ellis 83). As divine mothers, the Celtic mother goddesses, like the Greek goddesses of the spring, are associated with water as a sacred source of veneration and life-giving power. According to Anne Ross: "Rivers are important in themselves, being associated with deities such as the divine mothers and the sacred bull".
The Matrona in their three-fold aspect embrace the concept of the mother and the nurses as the goddesses that surround the divine child.“
