So yesterday this happened: I was kindly invited to join and present the closing of an awesome art exhibition by Carolina Lombardi "Knitting chaos" in Rome,

all about visualisations of networks composed by the artist using string of words: an opera which took years to make! Also, stunning visualisation of the expansion dynamics of slime mold samples grown and photographed by the author.

I was asked to show some parallel complex networks in

@franco_vazza How did you feel about the interaction with a more artsy crowd? Did you feel you could reach them? I once gave a talk about the cosmic web and LSS simulations in an art venue in Berlin and found it impossible to engage in fruitful conversation after my talk. The strong esoteric and metaphysical preconceptions of a lot of the visitors were just too strong and the whole time I was just trying to point out the limits and goals of the scientific method. Never tried it again.

@grimgorg 🤭 it went quite well to be honest. The artist herself is very interested in science, and discovered about the slime mold after noticing an astronomy article in which they sort of used it to reconstruct the cosmic web. The other "panelists" also were somewhat related to complexity and network in physics or media stuff, so the event itself did not call for much exoteric detours..

Here is a 10 Min long documentary about this exhibition (not sure if it's available outside of Italy though):

The accelerated movies of the slime mold "moving" and creating structures to encapsulate its food (corn flakes) are mesmerising

I wasn't aware of the prodigies the slime mold (Physarum polycephalum), an organism probably 500 million years old and without a central neuronal system, can do!

@AstroMikeHudson yes indeed...I quoted that in my "pitch"!
