Spotify(!1!!), the IMHO shady Swedish outfit that does everything to avoid paying artists decent money for streams, successfully accuses Apple of being anti-competitive and might have caused a 500M€ fine against Apple. I need a few beer now. https://arstechnica.com/apple/2024/02/report-apple-is-about-to-be-fined-e500-million-by-the-eu-over-music-streaming/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

@jwildeboer fascinating how Tidal and Napster can do it

hannesstein,

@jwildeboer Let's wait and see if there will be effects of the Digital Markets Act as well. Speaking of Spotify: I need to change my personal habits. I used to buy 1 or 2 CDs (later: DRM-free MP3 albums) per month until my children insisted on subscribing to Spotify... Now I need a new routine forcing myself to support musicians (escpecially not well-known bands) besides attending concerts.

@hannesstein @jwildeboer Aim for a compromise: Use to disover (some) new music, buy music on fridays and physical media to support the artists. Even though I enjoy the convenience of streaming services I try to keep my favorite music stored free of DRM. Still using apps such as on my phone to play music. Setting up on my new home is next, so I can stream all my stored music to any device.

hannesstein,

@cryptgoat @jwildeboer I'd really love to have this kind of "fridays"-routine... Having a micordonation service (like formerly falttr) coupled to streaming would be nice: I decide the amount I want to spend every month and it's distributed among the musicians I've heard the most. I'd love to filter popular song or dead musicians as they don't need my donation any more. Having spend more than a limit enables to download the drm-free mp3 album.
