Thought on . It's still a thing, and still deadly, but it's my impression that it's tapering off and becoming our new influenza. Just like the Spanish flu killed everybody and their dog and now we just have an annual shot and relatively low risk of serious illness, so too has Covid weakened and become less of a threat. It killed all kinds of people here during the , but my son has it right now and he's croopy, but I'm still allowed to work and nobody around here wears masks. 1/

I'm not saying we shouldn't take reasonable precautions, but my experience on the ground here in eastern Kentucky is that basically nobody takes it seriously any more. Several people I know have caught it in recent months and none of them have serious symptoms, so the need to perpetually self and wear a mask seems to have subsided. Hell, it was a fight to get people to wear one here even when people "were" dying, and we didn't seem to have it any worse than other communities. :END:

@gerowen No serious symptoms because said people are vaxed?

@marczak I'd wager vaccination rates around here are actually relatively low. We're a rural town with a lot of politically conservative and religious people. It didn't help matters any that several people who got vaccinated got sick and even died. Our rescue squad coordinator made a public showing of getting his shot and he got sick and died, so it didn't instill a lot of confidence in the efficacy of the shot.

We seem to be attaining herd immunity, as well as the virus weakening overall.

@gerowen Huh, ok, then. I’d say here (NY), vax rates are relatively high (but in no way 100%), so, most people that I’ve heard of getting Covid recently are vaxed, and they have a pretty easy time of of. Apparently, they hand out paxlovid like candy now as well.

@marczak All they gave my little boy was supplements for Zinc, vitamin D and some Robitussin to help with the congestion and symptoms. I've seen commercials for Paxlovid though. He's doing fine, just croopy; he's mainly just hanging out in his room playing on his Steam Deck.
