Recently, a friend said to me that AI is the only hope for humanity to solve climate change and while I completely disagree I honestly start to wonder: are there any major developments in that area that you know of? Is there any promising AI project that could help solve climate change?
@bastianallgeier most of the use cases where AI is helpful today are trying to mitigate environmental harm in various industries or monitor the current state better.
Ai based image pattern recognition is kind of useful in recycling for example because it leads to a better separation of materials and less waste (e.g. Greyparrot is doing that in the uk)… but not creating packaging that has to be recycled at all would be a way better reduction 🤷♀️
@bastianallgeier I’m working at a company using AI to improve near-time forecasting and optimization of wind/solar power production, which helps displace coal/gas power. But even as someone working in the field, I wouldn’t go as far as what your friend said. Deploying and iterating on existing “atoms” (not “bits”) technology will be what saves us, we don’t need to wait for an AI savior. I do think AI can help make the energy transition a bit faster and a bit more economical though.
@leonoverweel That sounds pretty reasonable to me! I have to say that I get a lot more excited about AI in the context you describe than in many other fields.
@armstrong That's the kind of stuff that came to my mind as well. Could it help to advance material research and other developments like that. But I hardly ever see anything about it although I watch quite a lot of green tech stuff.
