Along with approximately half the planet I finally scratched the Northern Lights off the bucket list last night, though this doesn’t do them justice. What a show.

Some properly futuristic hardware in the new iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard + Pencil Pro. Basically the perfect adaptive laptop. Looks amazing. Too bad about the software.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@jonikorpi the software completely castrates it. Maybe they have something special lined up for WWDC but I won’t hold my breath.

My fiancée and I want to make a new game on top of a core mechanic from a 2011 mobile game. It’s no longer on sale or playable anywhere, and the company that developed it doesn’t seem to exist anymore. We can’t even find any other games that use the mechanic.

What’s the correct etiquette here? Find one of the devs and ask for permission, or just do it?

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@jonikorpi don’t think you have any obligation but it’s always cool to give credit to your inspirations

I'm going through various AI coding helpers for a few months now. I want to keep an open mind and understand if there's something really mind-blowingly helpful. But so far, I haven't found anything that is more than "nice to have". I think it's also a lot about the tasks that we need to solve at @getkirby Coding speed is never really an issue. That's why I don't massively profit from autocompletion help. The obstacles are always conceptual questions. Did you find anything indispensable for you?

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@paulca @bastianallgeier I’ve found it to be like a step ladder… it helps me reach further than I otherwise could, but I still need to do the work

I’ve been obsessed with lightsaber replicas and I’ve been modifying mine to make it more movie accurate:

  1. Sanded it to make it less shiny
  2. Painted the inner tube black
  3. Added The Force Awakens clamp plate to hide the Graflex logo
  4. Replaced the glass eye with a more accurate one.
  5. Replaced the “beer tab” with a flat one
  6. Cut and assembled my own plastic t-tracks to fix a weird gap between the clamp

Help…

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@rafa the first step is admitting you have a problem

Finally finished Loki Season 2 last night. For some reason, I’d not watched further since episode 1 came out.

First of all, I love the art direction and casting. The aesthetics of the TVA are just sublime. Season 2’s plot has felt a bit all over the place, but ended well. What stood out most for me most though, was this lovely piece of melancholia at the end by Natalie Holt https://open.spotify.com/track/14ttivyM8Dj0xichnst1Vd?si=BcVDkD5nTDWLNn29BLB8ig

Are you interested in Masonry layout?? Graphic design on the web?

We just published a 4,000 word blog post investigating the current stage of the Grid Level 3 specification and all the amazing things you can do with it: https://webkit.org/blog/15269/help-us-invent-masonry-layouts-for-css-grid-level-3/

If you design or build websites, please read and chime in with your thoughts.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@jensimmons is that thread just for discussion about the name, or is it also a good place to chime in with use cases and examples?

Really keen to help move this forward in any way I can.

After several years of depending on macOS Time Machine for my backups I’m beginning to fold to Apple’s easy route of just throwing Documents and Desktop into iCloud. We’ve already leaned fairly far into iCloud for photo backups so might as well

Recently, a friend said to me that AI is the only hope for humanity to solve climate change and while I completely disagree I honestly start to wonder: are there any major developments in that area that you know of? Is there any promising AI project that could help solve climate change?

armstrong,

Weirdly happy to see this ad on the Newtownards Road. It would be nice if thugs would fuck off forever but assuming they won’t, it’s nice they don’t have as much visible sway any more.

The East Belfast I knew as a kid would have had this vandalised or destroyed at the very hint of anti-paramilitary talk.

Not pictured, the giant UVF mural just beside it. Baby steps.

When a business says “we will have to pass the cost onto consumers”, do they know they could just not do that?

I hate how they make it sound like their hands are tied and they have no agency.

There is a cost to doing business, and if you can’t cope with your costs going up a bit, do better forecasting.

edit: Not all businesses, this toot brought to you by an estate agent crying that their marketing costs are increasing

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn not all businesses are high-margin though. e.g. Grocery stores typically have 1-3% profit margin, so if their costs increase by 5% what are they supposed to do?

I didn’t know that there is a series of Dune books.

Are the movies based on the book “Dune” or the entire series?

I was going to buy the book tonight, now I’m not sure I want to commit!

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn the current movies are based on the first book. So if you watch Part 1 and Part 2, that will bring you up to the end of the first book.

There’s talk of a third movie based on the 2nd book (Dune Messiah)
