tangential to but inspired by the OP: I think the way we address the Masto Reply Guy Infestation is make an absolutely clear shared reality that the replies are the Thunderdome and the best way not to get rocked is not to enter

We aren't naming the root of the issue when we roll our eyes at “Reply Guys”

the root of the issue is finite cognitive resources, and strangers who spend them thoughtlessly, or worse, with entitlement

like it is absolutely wild to me how a person I have never fucking met, on an instance with absolutely unhinged character constraints, will WRITE AN ESSAY AT ME before negotiating anything close to consent for that much of my time

fuck off

You are not entitled to conversation.

You are entitled to earn conversation.

@danilo I think I saw it best recently with “I’ve known you for ten seconds and none of those have been pleasant, I’m not taking homework assignments from you”

@danilo What is the point of social media if replys are bad? Isn't that the whole point of social Media? Communicating with people?
Maybe one way communication is better like a blog where you can't reply?

danilo,
@danilo@hachyderm.io avatar

@Zeugs replies are not bad

BAD REPLIES ARE BAD

@danilo I have read this reply guy thing before but I don't get it. You don't know what is good or not before you know/read it.
Wasn't that one of the "Internet phenomena" in the first place? Why masto reply guys? What is the difference to message board people from the 90s that annoy you?

@danilo@hachyderm.io avatar

@Zeugs here u go

Some people deliberately choose to ignore, misread, disregard or denounce other people's bids. Others are outright clueless and don't know how to play, and sometimes cluelessness leads to worse bungling than deliberate malice (JJ's razor) Replying to @cr1901 "The intentionality of an agent with behavior sufficiently indistinguishable from malice, is irrelevant." (JJ's razor > Hanlon's (.) @cr1901 Visakan Veerasan @visaka • Sep 11, 2018 ••• I was a lot more belligerent and disagreeable when I was younger, in part because I simplistically thought playing other people's games was a sheep-like way to live. Why should I support other people's dumb games? Why not mock them instead? It's easy, and intoxicating Visakan Veerasan @visaka • Sep 11, 2018 ••• learned that you rarely build anything worthwhile that way. The "best" case scenario: you win over other disagreeable people. A few years of this & it becomes the world you live in - surrounded by other belligerent assholes who don't know or care how to play nice. A cursed life

@danilo aaaahh they do replys to themself. Thanks .Interesting ... So they use the attention on other posts to put their mega thread into it. Sounds a bit like chatgpt is writing the answers. I have noticed that only one time here....

danilo,
@danilo@hachyderm.io avatar

@Zeugs yeah, I don't think you're getting it but that's okay
