@weilawei

WHAT KIND OF JACKASS IS LAUNCHING ROCKETS INTO SPACE BUT HAS APPARENTLY NEVER HEARD OF METAL FATIGUE

And dammit Buttigieg is not going to help, his only actual transportation experience before he was appointed was throwing Bernie under the bus.

Uggggghhh my skull hurts

aud,

@violetmadder @weilawei to be fair, Elon musk isn’t launching shit, it’s the workers that launch it. On that note, he’s also never built a single car.

And if there was any doubt about who is doing the engineering work … see this tweet, aka exhibit A 😂

@aud @weilawei @violetmadder I mean, obviously, but working for someone who knows nothing about what you are doing, but thinks they do is always really difficult.

Especially someone like Musk who has no regard for regulations and experience.

"working for someone who knows nothing about what you are doing, but thinks they do is always really difficult."

Ugh, I feel this so hard.

aud,

@SteveClough @weilawei @violetmadder yeah, he’s a wad of chewed gum.

@aud @weilawei @violetmadder It is also true that I would never work for Musk. I have worked for some great people and some horrible people. I would never go back to the horrible people again.

Musk is the worst of the worst as employers go.

aud,

@SteveClough @weilawei @violetmadder oh, for sure! He's an absolute goddamn piece of shit. Actively racist, transphobic fascist capitalist piece of privileged fuck. He inherited stolen wealth from Africa, then has used that to steal more wealth from everyone else.

Sorry, I realize now my "to be fair" may have sounded like a defense of Musk, which, fuck him. He needs to be stopped, his corporations forcibly taken from home, and his assets partially repatriated and/or used for reparations/to solve the numerous ways he's fucked people over. I would under no circumstance defend him or suggest he's anything but a complete fuck.

@aud @weilawei @violetmadder I didn;t read it like that. Just as an akcnowledgement that he was a manager not a do-er. For which we should probably be very grateful. But also understand - he doesn't know any engineering.

@SteveClough @aud @weilawei

I picked up enough basic physics from being around my engineer dad that even as a little KID I would've already known what Musk said here is absurd. After this many years being involved in these industries, there's no excuse for that level of ignorance. How is he supposed to judge what to invest in or what management decisions to make if he's not paying the simplest bit of attention?

I am no fan of Buttigieg from his campaign days but all my transpo advocacy friends have been pleasantly surprised with his USDOT. Actually doing shit we should have been doing for a long time but haven't, across modes.

To be fair that bar is EXTREMELY low. Just a few drops of common sense actually applied for once can seem like a miracle at this stage.

Seriously. I DO know quite a bit about steel, metal fatigue and trying to salvage old worn-out junk. Let me just say, even ignoring metal fatigue as a factor, it will take more time to try and bend, beat and twist all that metal back into a shape that can be reassembled than it could ever take to start with fresh. Any company that takes that bid will be planning on making more from change-orders from all the inevitable delays than they could ever dream of getting out of some unattainable early completion bonus.

As for Pete, I'm still not on board with the DNC's great white hope for a centrist future for the party, though I suspect he IS smart enough to listen to people who DO know what the fuck they're talking about... unlike the budget Bond-villain.

Yeah you gotta melt it down and forge that stuff afresh, a major bridge is one of the LAST places you can get away with cobbling together damaged materials.

I'm just a fine arts dropout, but my father is a civil engineer (his college team came in 3rd in the national bridge building contest, beating out MIT's) and I can VERY clearly picture the look on his face when he hears about this shit. 😣 I'll not be the one to tell him, I don't like to cause him even more of that kind of pain.

It's like Musk has never sat down and actually listened to any engineers about anything. Unbelievable.

It's not impossible to reuse some unspecified amount of the original material, but to do it safely, you would have to examine every joint for cracks and tears, replace hardware, examine individual beams for straightness... So on... This is going to take a LOT of time and you really don't know what you can reuse until you're done.

Furthermore, it would be a huge wasted opportunity to upgrade the design.

Also, I'd like to point out that his incentive for early and safe completion is a bit of a weasel trick that industry uses to put pressure on workers not to report injuries. "You don't want to be the guy who fucks up our safety record do you?"
