Sometimes I worry that being on Mastodon is slowly transforming me into an actual software engineer and not just a clever impostor. One day you’re a historian who needed a living salary, and then before you know it you’re reading a back-and-forth on git merge vs rebase.

@Zeb_Larson Mastodon users seem to be very skewed towards being people working in the IT professions. However, I am also pleased that many of them are deep thinkers. More generally in the workforce I am concerned how many developers/devops people think that they know all other professions and that other professions are not worth much. Of course this opinion is helped by the high salaries they are on.

So when I hear opinions like 'the arts are not necessary in the workforce', I point out the computer games they play, the GUIs that dominate the world. People generally are not interested in playing games in the command line and they like games with stories.

The products developers and IT engineers create sell well due to the artists and writers employed who provide the creativity and understanding of human culture that makes the product easy and desirable to use.

Having people with our background in the IT professional space can help to inject some alternative ways of thinking. We are valuable.
