Today is World Autism Awareness Day and my work put out a little blurb about it in their weekly newsletter.
Normally that would be great, except for the entire frigging thing focused on the stereotypical shortcomings of autistic people, with no actual call-to-action for neurotypical people to accommodate autistic people or highlighting the spectrum.
It linked to an article on the GOC's mental health website (lifespeak) that turned out to a) actually be more nuanced than the blurb they chose, highlighting positives as well, but also b) was entirely - entirely! - about children. Helpful.
I sent feedback saying that I found it upsetting, particularly given that I had colleagues with autism that were being poorly accommodated by their workplace and said that it was a missed opportunity for education and a positive perspective.
@casseagull I find that never expecting anything more than the most shallow, performative gestures from senior management on these type of topics is the appropriate mindset
@stephanie I am so mad about it. I sent the note to begin with because I have a colleague who has had the most horrendous things said to her in response to her having autism and I just can't with these useless shitheads anymore.
