Public intellectuals in the 21st century include David Brooks, to whom we owe this gem:
"Creativity is not a solitary process. It happens within networks... when talented people get together, when idea systems and mentalities merge."
Of course, Mr. Brooks network is very exclusive. He's so lazy his quest to discover true America lasted only two days before he retired to the comfort of his mansion to bemoan the state of things.
Public intellectuals in the 21st century also include Richard Florida who, with bad econometrics and indubitable eloquence (and a talent for self-promotion), convinced cities up and down to sell themselves to the creative class, because what are even poor people?
This is what passes for intellectual contributions in the 21st century. So-called public intellectuals today are nothing more than a confederation of simple-minded, scared, anxious, greedy idiots.
