YouTube recommended me a short of of someone’s Tesla self-driving. The whole video was about how amazing it was that the car safely undertook an “unprotected” left turn (which would be a right turn for me) across three lanes of traffic.

I thought “oh, that’s cool” and then I realised that, hang on, I can execute this manoeuvre safely and without fanfare and have done so multiple times. Why is it a big deal when a robot does it?

Anyway, despite the narrator’s showboating about how smart his car is, he overlooked something.

The car turned left into the wrong lane.

By wrong lane, the car moved into the left-turn lane of the oncoming traffic (which was clear), before going to the correct travel lane.

So it essentially cut across the junction instead actually doing an arc through the junction.

Actually to make it worse, there was actually an earlier gap in traffic that I noticed that I would have definitely driven through.

Makes it even more funny that the car was set to “assertive mode” but didn’t assert itself for a large gap in traffic.

🌟 @yassie_j < I love having different Modes for a self driving car. You'd imagine þere would just be one mode þat's like as safe as possible but no you can just turn on like rude mode or some shit 🌟
