I still don't know what "apt" is and still type "apt-get" every time. Does anyone want to try to convince me I am doing something wrong here

Somebody told me aptitude is able to catch like conflicts and accidental removal of core packages and stuff but also I think the last time I upgraded ubuntu it told me aptitude is deprecated? So idk

@mcc Given that the dependency graph for ubuntu is cyclic, we’re taking it on faith that upgrading won’t trash things anyway.

@mcc aptitude is very different than apt

aptitude is a whole different resolver and a curses based UI for it

In some cases, where there were weird problems with multiple possible solutions, aptitude gave a better way of viewing those possible solutions and coming up with a set of packages that work

But, I only used it occasionally back in the day, and eventually forgot how to use it. Apt got better at picking better defaults, and I always preferred it to remembering how to navigate aptitude

@unlambda @mcc I still use aptitude specifically for the UI. The way it allows you to carefully look at the conflicts and operate to fix them is a life-saver, although I would prefer if it had a better resolver, or if it could be used to manage the apt choices

@mcc I was under the impression that the shorter one was more apt at its job so I switched

JLab8,

@mcc seems a little sketch to get your packages from an advanced persistent threat, but that's just me.

@JLab8 i was just thinking about this the other day… https://mastodon.social/@mcc/112215294054247478

@mcc apt-get isn't going away, and it has a more stable api than apt which is more of a convienience helper script for apt-get and other apt-* tools. It's fine to keep using apt-get.

aptitude is very bad and should be used by no one. It will mess up your system and ruin your day.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@mathieucomandon is it more convenient? apt. i mean

mathieucomandon,
@mathieucomandon@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcc it merges several tools together, so I guess it is, even if it's marginal. (I mostly use dnf these days)

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@mathieucomandon Oh, that finally got released, huh

unlambda,
@unlambda@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc Really, apt is just a wrapper that forwards some things to apt-get and some things to apt-cache. The vast majority of the time, all it does is save you from typing that "-get" or "-cache"

As long as your hands are willing to type those few extra characters, there's no difference. It's just there because people ask "why do I have to remember which commands are in apt-get and which are in apt-cache" and "why do I have to type that extra -get and -cache"?

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@unlambda oh. but i already memorized which commands are the -cache ones so i guess i'm ok

@mcc I’ve been typing apt get for years and just forced myself to switch to apt because I kept seeing hints in docs that somehow apt is newer? I have no idea why.
