A thing I don't think I really like about recent anime is a thing where they almost all seem to have an emotional memories-of-things-that-happened-in-the-show-up-to-now montage in the final episode but the show is like 12 episodes long so it feels kinda unearned
@mcc we've had a rewatch of the office running in the background and it does the opposite - there's a big emotional montage featuring scenes almost exclusively from the first 4 seasons but the show is 9 seasons long
Does it let them cut the amount of new animation they have to do for that final episode by a significant amount, and thus let them animate the HELL out of the climax of the whole series?
@mcc I started watching an anime in late-2020, right? I got through half the first episode before putting it aside, until ~2 weeks ago. Yea, high latency.
They killed off > half the cast in the first episode. Uhhh... glad I didn't get attached to any of them.
@mcc yeah, one of the issues with the 12 episode and done thing is that while some shows have adapted to like packing a lot of plot into episodes, they're still often paced like older series with 24 or 50 episodes, like with the recap stuff (sometimes it'll be a montage of something that just happened in that very episode or 1 episode ago even) or like an ensemble cast where they spend 1 episode to introduce each girl and by the time they're all finally together the show is almost over
@mcc They did this in the "Lonely Castle in the Mirror" #anime#movie and it pissed me off...such LAZY writing! And terrible pacing for a feature film...I'm sure the source material is fine but its all this boring nothing for most of the runtime then BOOM montage reveal and end like WHAT?! The editor/director should've been dribbling out clues to keep the audience invested and interested and trying to figure things out...I liked the resolution but not how they got there....
@mcc I realized my anime would only last 4 episodes, so I just replay those 4 episodes at the end with a fuzzy white border, sentimental music, and muted dialogue.
I expect the awards to come rolling in any day now.
@mcc Pitch: 2 episode OVA where the second episode is 1 minute of new footage and then the entirety of the first episode with a fuzzy "memories" filter and with sad music playing over the top.
@mcc@jplebreton well they’re doing recaps of fights that are currently in progress. Like “hey remember last episode when this big fight was reaching its climax? Well here it is again, you have to wait another week to finish it”
@coolpowers@mcc the current (anime) arc has been going on so long that flashbacks to stuff from early in the arc are starting to feel like deep cuts. a small % of the padding has added stuff but https://onepace.net definitely exists for a reason (or better yet read the manga!)
