Why do you like Mastodon (or any open source Fediverse app of your choosing) the most?

Boosts appreciated for reach.

badtuple,

@RickiTarr I don't think the results so far are very telling...but for some reason they're INCREDIBLY interesting.

What is the strangest thing you've ever purchased?

badtuple,

@RickiTarr I calculated out how many lumens would be required to make my apartment as bright as full noon daylight. Then bought a GIANT industrial lightbulb (w/ necessary cooling + fixture) to do so.

I have brought my light bulb to parties.

Okay, so I'm going to type out a sentence, and I want you all to finish it, but instead of doing deep thinking about it, just type the very first thing that pops into your head. I know this will be hard for many of you, but try it! LOL

If I could do whatever I wanted to right now, I would _________.

Name a movie or TV series where none of the characters are actually good people. Explain why you think that.

badtuple,

@RickiTarr There are times I don't think anyone actually saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

I believe that some people could identify with some of the characters....but I have no idea why you'd admit it.

Hey friends, if I wanted a good crate / library to handle the drawing/rendering of stuff to a screen but not pull in an entire ECS system that dictates how I structure my game logic, what would I be using?

If You're a man who is 30+

What is the historical time period You're obsessed with?

badtuple,

@RickiTarr Right now the Lusitanians and Celtiberians from ~200-100 BCE!

We know so little about their cultures, especially the Lusitani, and what we do have is mainly via things written down by Romans who were uh...not exactly unbiased.

Thinking about how Arch [or Arch derivatives like Manjaro] really do seem to have their shit together but I'd be worried about my system suddenly sliding from a good state to a bad state after one upgrade.

Is there likeโ€ฆ a way to run Arch with checkpoints you can wind back?

Or is that just NixOS? Like is the thing I just described NixOS

(Note: Yes, this is the kind of post it's appropriate to reply to recommending Linux distributions, in this case I asked for it)

badtuple,

@mcc I've run Arch for years and it's remarkably stable, but when something does get out of sync there's no real rollback. I just kind of hack around things to fix a random issue until it's resolved... which isn't great. But it's worth it for me since it's infrequent.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive is often listed as a way to "rollback" but I'm not sure I know anyone who actually uses it? Usually forums just say to do backups or to "upgrade more often"...neither of which are answers imo.

badtuple,

@screwtape huh, thanks for the insight! I looked and it seemed like the spec, and some prominent tooling + blogs had been abandoned. But it would make sense that I'm simply not looking in the right place.

This video, as a side note, hits you with a full lecture on color theory.

badtuple,

@janriemer @kornel

Thanks! I'm getting super in the weeds on this stuff.

I'm building a small APL-inspired color calculator so you can calculate things like:

Take this 16 color color scheme, invert it, interpolate it into a range and sample out the 8 most representative colors. Verify that the minimized colorscheme meets WCAG accessibility guidelines. If not, solve for the most minimal re-sample required to meet them.

It's fun to build a repl / language with colors as a primitive!

Color theory's intense.

How on earth does Honeycomb not have the ability to have both AND and OR clauses in their query filters?

That's so incredibly limiting.

badtuple, to programming

Do people have examples of Entity Component Systems used outside of games?

If you squint, relational/columnar DBs line up data wise (though the System analogy is fuzzier). Data Frame style tools inspired by APLs sort of fuzzy match as well.

Curious if anyone knows other ECS or quasi-ECS patterns in real software. Especially if you built it and have opinions!

(Boosts welcome! plz forgive the hashtag spam: )

It's not "is it immediately understandable?"...everything is strange when it's new.

It's "do you only have to learn it once?"...If you can learn a thing once and then leverage it repeatedly without having to crack it back open then that's a good abstraction.

A thing I don't think I really like about recent anime is a thing where they almost all seem to have an emotional memories-of-things-that-happened-in-the-show-up-to-now montage in the final episode but the show is like 12 episodes long so it feels kinda unearned

    badtuple,

@mcc I realized my anime would only last 4 episodes, so I just replay those 4 episodes at the end with a fuzzy white border, sentimental music, and muted dialogue.

I expect the awards to come rolling in any day now.

Poll: Have you ever run the command "rm -rf /" as a root user on your , (or *BSD), , or system? Please share if you have and how it happened. Let's be honest. Please boost for reach. TIA.

    badtuple,

@nixCraft Yep. An Arch update left my laptop in a janky state. I logged in as root to do some hacky surgery and tried to rm -rf a totally safe path. Except it was an absolute path and I accidentally typed a space between the leading slash and the rest.

I have to buy a litmus test because when I google "pH of Green Tea" every single result is wildly different and has an example of a non-green tea pH level that I KNOW is not right.

Lists of accurate pH ranges of various things seems like exactly the kind of thing the internet did at one point. There must be an archived geocities site out there with a <TABLE> layout and a <MARQUEE> scrolling "Dave's pH pHun House" across one of the cells.

Working on something like Forth that operates on a stream instead of a stack. It's mind bending in the best possible way. No idea if it's gonna end up usable, but it's a great way to pass a sunday.
