huh...next door neighbor sold their house a few weeks ago...today hydro and electricians are disconnecting the solar panels and their separate service line...I guess they're taking them with them? Seems odd.

hmmm... after working for a couple of hours, it looks like Hydro and the solar panel techs have removed the 2nd meter and service line that were dedicated to the solar system.

This is an installation that would've been under Ontario's MicroFIT program, which didn't do any net metering and required an expensive dedicated meter & service.

It might be at the end of 10y since it's gone in? Maybe the contract expired?

The panels and grid-tie equipment is still there, I guess that's staying.

maybe the MicroFIT contract isn't transferable? That wouldn't surprise me that the ass backwards Ford PCs would put something like that in to force people out of MicroFIT. And then pay them 5x to get them back into it before long....

@johnefrancis I'm pretty sure my friends bought a house on that program and they still have the panels since the sale closed last year.

johnefrancis,

@dairpo but do they have a fully independent electrical connection for them?

MicroFIT initially had some unusual rules that basically made the solar array entirely separate from the house. The only time it could power the house is when the main grid was off, maybe. 100% of the generated power went out to the grid at MicroFIT rates, and the house ran 100% on normal power at normal TOU rates. So you couldn't charge your car or battery "for free" with it.

@johnefrancis @dairpo yeah. Seems possible. MicroFIT isn’t quite dead. The remaining contracts will expire 2029 through 2037… new owners might have just wanted it gone so they didn’t have to deal with it.. or maybe hydro ottawa didn’t want to transfer the other line..

@johnefrancis Maybe it was a condition of sale because your new neighbour is a bit of a crazy person who does not like all the wokeness of microgeneration.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@johnefrancis They don't want their friends coming to see them living in a house that is not powered by carbon.

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

@human3500 could be ...

The lady's ex does solar installation and put it up there before they split. Maybe he's come to collect his solar system like he did earlier with the hot tub.

It seems she decided to keep the aging chihuahuas.

I think he made the right call with the hot tub.
