Hmm I'm actually slightly worried about my dad. He has started forgetting a lot of stuff, and my mom told me today that he sometimes "invent" memories.

He actually told her not long ago that "they traveled a lot with us kids"......

We were pretty poor when I was a kid, there was definitely not a lot of traveling 🤨

He wasn't the best dad, he definitely wasn't the best husband... But my mom telling me he's not "aging gracefully" is not good. She deserves the world.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@stephanie There are treatments, but he will need to want to participate for a proper diagnosis.

If he won't go to see a specialist, what he eats is important as is sleeping and exercise (even walking). Moving blood through his brain should help.

Good luck down this road.

We're building too few houses. Productivity in the economy is weak. But productivity in the homebuilding sector is especially bad, so one crisis is worsening the other.

Colleague Kevin Carmichael tries to figure out what's up and what we can do about it: https://thelogic.co/comment/carmichael-are-canadas-builders-up-to-the-task-of-solving-the-housing-crisis/

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@davidreevely Do we need to build houses, or can we just build homes? Homes introduce many options other than houses, such as apartments which we really need more of if we're also interested in saving the planet.

@WhippoorwillSong Well, we do zero proactive enforcement of anything and so many people are filled with entitlement that they ignore laws they don't like.

We don't actually live as a society.

I'm compensating for several desk days in a row with some yard work today. Nice to be outside and moving around.

Doing the no-mow May for the bees and birds, so I can leave that part of it, but there are lots of other things to do.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross Can you fill me in on how no mow may is good for bees and birds?

I never see bees on dandelions and the birds are mostly looking for worms it seems. What are your birds and bees doing in the lawn?

It seems like a way to spread dandelions more than anything.

Does it smell like a forest fire outside in right now? Or is it someone buying crap in their back yard?

Smoke numbers climbing in Ottawa. I think today is supposed to be the worst, so a good idea to keep an eye on it. https://map.purpleair.com/1/i/mAQI/a10/p604800/cC0?select=96219#11.89/45.3974/-75.71393

@mariellequintonThe smoke map isn't showing forest fire smoke, but I do see the PM2.5 is at the two cigarettes a day level.

We're killing all the grass in the yard to prepare for all the plants we ordered. The birds are ecstatic about it! They're taking so much dead grass away and eating so much in the dirt!

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@stephanie Don't let the city catch you. You are obliged to have grass. I don't have any in front either, and I'm getting away with it.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@stephanie That's new. A neighbour had to plant grass a couple years ago. She has maybe 100 square feet in front.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@Auxonic @stephanie Yeah the city restored my front yard to something that wasn't compliant.

Edit to add that "this approach was less expensive". I was totally on board with what was done and i even suggested it.

I just learned about the Robinson baronetcy of Toronto. Pretty fascinating part of the history of Ontario as the first baronet and other families attempted to establish themselves as, essentially, the upper Canada equivalent of the house of Lords.

I had never heard of a baronetcy before. Well, maybe when I was in grade school, but it doubt it.

Hey to all the people replying to photos of the aurora with comments like “We get this all the time where I live, what’s the big deal?”:

Nobody asked you. You’re insufferable. Let people have fun.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@drahardja I was one adjacent to a bunch of birders along a migration route while I was 1000km from home . They were pretty excited to see a particular Goldfinch which we see every summer (and I'm not even a birder).

Everyone's lived life is different and if someone is enjoying it (legally) we should be happy for them.

While we see these birds all summer, they might only see them once and now they are checking it off their life list. Good for them.

Just received a blocking for saying killing children was bad. Apparently some people think killing children is okay depending on who is doing the killing and who is being killed.

Edited to remove a sentence that didn't make sense and i can't figure out what I was getting at. Thanks auto whatever which hallucinated the words i typed.

Yeah, why can't you all shut up about the genocide of Palestinians and just enjoy your bread and circuses... okay, well, the bread is too expensive for lots of people right too, so at least your circuses!

We're also going to throw this LGBTQ+ reference in here to make it seem like your choice is also a little homo- and transphobic.

human3500,

@casseagull It's weird how Eurovision kicked out Russia for invading another country / committing war crimes.

I’m seeing this graphic making the rounds withouth attribution - many versions have the info at the bottom cut off. The creator is alienyrox2 on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/user/alienyrox2/).

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@MichaelPorter You should always put your attribution in a place where it can't be cut off like this.

Also, your graphic in my app didn't show the attribution unless I opened the graphic. Maybe you are seeing a bit of that as well.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@MichaelPorter My app displays what looks like the entire image - it crops it beautifully.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@MichaelPorter The app is making the exact crop of the full image as the cropped image when it appears in my feed. So my feed consists of identical looking images - I have to expand them to see if the image is complete or cropped.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@MichaelPorter I've had that typo so often I know what you meant to say.

Things are looking good for the Northern lights. I've never wanted the sun to go down early before but hurry up darkness (my old friend).

Edit. This only makes sense if I fill in some details. If KP (whatever that is) is high, aurora is more likely. The number on the bottom right is cloud cover.

Combined, the clouds will dissipate and the magnetic clouds will increase. A good combo! Unless it gets too high I guess. Then it's bad. Charge your phone.

@dairpo Dunno. It's there now if it's dark enough. 9 seems like the max so it should be amazing. I've heard to look through your camera but nothing for me yet. Lots of light pollution to ruin things too.
