What creative movements are like the demoscene, but aren't the demoscene?

Things I can think of: livecoding has communities from various walks of life. And the game jam communities have some similarities in terms of bringing graphics, music and code together, to a deadline.

But what else? Who else has quite so many parties, for one thing?

@aldroid I'd say competitive speed puzzling has a similar "we turned this hobby into a competitive thing because everything has to have competitions" . It's maybe not as creative/art however (unless you also include the puzzle designers?)

@pulkomandy it's also got spinning cubes, so there's that :)

@aldroid
knitting

Perhaps not as much as the demoscene (I'm not really participating in either), and definitely more commercial, but I'm often surprised to hear someone is going to Knitfest Sweden or so. I only learned recently that such things exist.

@aldroid speedrunning!

@aldroid probably could've said the same for gaming back in the 90s, with it being a more niche thing with LAN meetups, but it got so oversaturated and commercial that "gaming" is no longer any more of a specific subculture than "people who watch TV".

@aldroid Maybe amateur dramatics – it's a community creative endeavour to a deadline? Amateur bands? Graffiti / skating / flash mobs if that still happens?

@benjohn amateur dramatics is a really interesting thought, it intuitively seems very different to me and yet it's incredibly similar now you say it!

graffiti is intuitively sceney in my mind. the early hiphop communities had a noticeable influence on young sceners of the 90s.

@aldroid Open Source (in general, not only software specific)

@aldroid And by generalization, Academic & Research :)

aldroid,
@aldroid@mastodon.social avatar

@totetmatt that is a very broad connection! could you talk more about the similarity?

totetmatt,
@totetmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@aldroid Complex to develop in a toot, and quite subjective, but i see common things :

  • Multicultural groups , from personalities but also field of work
  • "Creative" movement not only on the "art" perspective but more on the "creation side as "artist" and "artisan" but not bind to any capitalistic goal of production and profit.

@aldroid Social & Cultural Lifecycle of Activites and codes might differs of course , but to materialize this, Revision and FOSDEM have a lot in common

totetmatt,
@totetmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@aldroid Basically, bunch of people working together for the "Techne" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techne

aldroid,

@totetmatt that's a very thoughtful perspective, thank you! i agree it's all about the techne. and i suppose, the cultural aspect is surrounding yourself with people who are also invested in the same goals.
