The news about marijuana becoming Schedule III is nice, but I can't help wondering if it's happening simply because cops have decided another pretense works just as well for terrorizing their victims and so are willing to let go of this one.
@lilithsaintcrow I suspect they figure if TFG gets re-elected they can harass anyone who identifies as female: "are you pregnant or trans?" — I'm pretty sure there are more women out there than cannabis users. (Oh, and part of Project 2025 is complete immunity from prosecution for all cops.)
@lilithsaintcrow "The purpose of a system is what it does". We're seeing, with the response to peaceful student protests, what policing in the American mode is for. As an institution it needs to justify its budget, which exceeds that of most front-rank militaries (eg. China, Russia, the UK). So of course they'll pick the biggest (and perceived-weakest) target …
@lilithsaintcrow On the up side: they're currently beginning to admit they've lost the war on drugs (see: marijuana downgrading in progress), they've visibly mishandled the Gaza protests (creating enemies), as a bastion of white supremacist values they're demographically encircled, and if Trump loses in November they'll be weakened further.
But a cornered predator is always at its most vicious.
@lilithsaintcrow probably true anyway, but it seems like if any big cop/prosecutor orgs had been consulted they would have leaked this to fox ahead of time.
My guess is that somebody in the Biden campaign can read the polls, and decided they absolutely needed to stop the bleeding, since the last student loan forgiveness announcement didn't do the trick, and now they have a big "campus unrest" problem too.
Like, there's a lot of money and cruelty bound up in keeping weed criminalised. That's not jsut going to vanish overnight. The machinery of repression needs a fig leaf to continue, and I'm wondering what the next one will be.
@lilithsaintcrow I kinda suspect cops have realized that the "I was afraid" fig leaf is both good enough and easier to deploy than planting weed on people.
@benhamill I am tormented by the suspicion that all that funding and cruelty will be turned against women seeking healthcare and college students (or anyone) exercising their right to protest, and that’s why there hasn't been more pushback from cop unions and War On Drugs(tm) propaganda outlets/contractors.
