@gwynnion I think it's mainly just arrogance. Playing his power games while feeling completely secure. "Whaddya gonna do, vote Trump?" he asked smugly, oblivious to the fact that non-voting will win the race for Gassolini as well.

I have to think they believe this is critical for US imperialism.
@foolishowl@orangelantern The issue is a deeply weird one. In some cases, it's just about money. For others, it's racism and colonialism. Some just hate Muslims and Arabic people (more). There's also the ideological sunk cost of having invested decades in the idea of Israel as an inherently virtuous state, sometimes as a kind of mental reparation for the Holocaust. The one thing none of these people do is actually pay attention to what Israel does, and they aren't about to consider it now.
@foolishowl@orangelantern But yeah, in a lot of cases there's an imperial / evangelical / apocalyptic conception of geopolitics at work, the idea Israel is an essential ally for what they consider the inevitable wars against Iran or whomever.
