Most Americans would be a-okay if someone just randomly shot Trump dead. Or if he went to prison. Or literally, if he faced any accountability whatsoever. It's only other wealthy white people who think it would be the end of the world and probably only because they're just as corrupt and shitty as he is. And that's what's driving a lot of elite behavior right now, I think.

Republicans and Democrats are unified in the belief that Muslims, Arabs, and Palestinians don't matter and deserve to die -- unless they're super rich and selling us oil, that is, like the Saudis.

There isn't any deep thought going on in American diplomatic and policymaking circles. 9/11 acted as a rubber stamp on their worst racist impulses and many never looked back.

At most, the Biden administration worried about how ironclad support for Israel would play with voters, and they ultimately decided they didn't give a fuck.

Despite talking up "the peace process," no modern Democratic president has shown any interest in the Palestinian side of the equation, preferring to hammer them with the Israeli government's cynical and sabotaging demands instead and using Hamas, who also negotiate in bad faith, as a pretext for endless genocidal violence against all Palestinians.

The cruelty is the point.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

The Israeli government has made clear, repeatedly, it is not interested in a one or two state solution or any peace that includes the return of territory or the recognition of a Palestinian state, which renders negotiations pointless.

Nevertheless, it is bipartisan US policy to pretend this is not true and to blame all failures on Hamas, often insisting no negotiations are possible as long as Hamas exists, giving cover for Israel to continue attacking all Palestinians.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

@DanadasGrau And Hamas are terrible! But anyone representing Palestinian interests get treated the same way, basically.

The US doesn't respect the UN any more than Russia does and is prepared to threaten international courts on behalf of its favorite rogue state, and yet we wonder why the rules based international order doesn't work anymore.

Fascists aren't smart. The secret to every fascist takeover isn't that fascists deviously conspired to seize power, it's that people shrugged and let them do it.

"New York Times editor Joe Kahn says defending democracy is a partisan act and he won’t do it"

"To the extent that Kahn has changed anything in the Times newsroom... it’s to double down on a form of objectivity that favors the comfortable-white-male perspective and considers anything else little more than hysteria."

I would venture that the defining problem of this era of politics, with obvious manifestations like Trump, is the entire elite media and political establishment swinging hard on a bipartisan basis on behalf of "comfortable white men," a violent and ongoing reaction against the pressure to do better from Me Too, COVID, BLM, trans people, and now Israel-Palestine, a stance which inevitably makes the young, the poor, women, and marginalized people the enemy of the white male supremacist state.

"You're a very beautiful girl," the doctor said, "Has anyone ever told you that? No, I don't think they have."

Rain was unmoved. She knew what he meant. In the hospital, she was one thing and here, she was another.

Like most humans, he understood transformation as a one-way, one time process. Therefore, this must be her "true" self revealed at last.

When in truth, it was just another form.

She was always the Laughing Girl underneath, of course, but he was not owed that secret.

"Do you know where I am?" Rain asked.

"Of course," Dr. Green said.

"No, you don't. I'm a hundred years in the future. A thousand. I'm in a field of green grass and wild flowers. There is nothing left of this place. Only stones."

"Is this meant to impress me?"

"No," Rain whispered, "Like I said, you can't even begin to understand it. It doesn't matter what you think. It doesn't matter what you do. You are just a blip in eternity to me."

Democrats have been iterating a politics of "lesser evil" pragmatism for so long that the scope of our problems has gotten tremendously worse at the same time our politicians' will to address them has shrunk almost to nothing.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

Here is a fundamental problem with American politics: people don't trust Democrats. They don't trust Republicans either. They don't trust the media. They don't trust corporations. They don't trust any of our institutions.

Why? Because they keep getting fucked and nobody seems to care.

So you can say, "Not voting for Biden and letting Trump win will make everything worse." Because it's true! But it's not persuasive to people who things are just going to keep getting worse anyway.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

I think most Americans have deduced, correctly, that government works primarily for the rich. You get the political outcomes you can afford.

We're told the economy is great, for example, while many of us can't afford housing, food, or healthcare because corporate profits are booming.

Red states, corporations, and the SCOTUS are all obviously corrupt but they can do whatever they want. They ruin our lives with the stroke of a pen. There's no oversight. There's minimal pushback.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

It's still obviously true that Republicans will make things worse.

Some people have always and will always vote for Democrats for that reason. But you and me voting rationally and pragmatically isn't going to win elections.

Especially when the choice is between a monster and a mediocrity under whom things actually do keep getting worse.

A lot of people feel angry and helpless, and it doesn't help when the mediocrity pretends his own shit doesn't stink.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

@Shebeencounter I think the ACA was an improvement, as flawed as it is, but it helps much less than people assume under an already broken healthcare system.

In a lot of cases, the best we've gotten are little, iterative things that were easily undone by the next Republican.

On the important things like abortion rights, we have clearly been losing.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

@Shebeencounter Agreed. On that scale, Democrats are objectively a failure and have long been part of the problem.

The thing that frightens me, more than Trump or Republicans even, is the feeling national Democrats are moving toward explicit white wealthy elite rule, an aristocracy of the rich and politically connected, and the rest of us can eat shit and deal with fascism from the bad cop Republicans if we don't like it. Any sense of reciprocity in politics is being erased. We do what they tell us, not the other way around, and they've got the cops on speed dial if we resist.

It's great Biden decided to die on the hill of supporting genocide during a do or die election against Trump.

I guess Zionism matters more to him than everything else.

gwynnion,
@gwynnion@mastodon.social avatar

@foolishowl @orangelantern But yeah, in a lot of cases there's an imperial / evangelical / apocalyptic conception of geopolitics at work, the idea Israel is an essential ally for what they consider the inevitable wars against Iran or whomever.
