One of the best indie publishers right now is Atari.

Yes, that Atari.

Over the past few years, they’ve let a bunch of small studios have fun with their IP. The result has been some of the best re-imaginings of classic video games ever produced.

Last year, they acquired both Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse, both specialists in re-invigorating classics like System Shock and Karateka. And they’re also now the caretakers of MobyGames and the AtariAge forums.

Also, not very many people know this, but they make consoles again. The past few years has seen the release of the new Atari VCS, Atari 2600+, and the Atari 400 Mini.

@AndyGER Well, the original Atari hasn’t existed since 1976. That’s when Warner Communications bought the original Atari.

And then Atari was split in two in 1984: Atari Corporation owned by Jack Tramiel, and Atari Games owned by Warner, Namco, and employees.

The current Atari is a descendant (so to speak) of Atari Corporation.
