The "Museumsinsel" is a small island in the river, and was actually the centre of medieval Berlin (her, it was easy to cross the river).
Unfortunately, there's nothing left of the medieval town, but in the 19th century, many museums were built on the island, so that the architecture is mainly imperial/classicistic.
