@schizanon awesome project, it looks cool! But I’m thinking not of another client but how to have Mastodon as headless (without its own frontend) then swap in another one like yours, elk or phanpy 🤔

@smurthys ah sorry if not clear. Mastodon is bundled and distributed with a frontend web app. My question is about the possibility of not having that frontend and swapping with another.

@ayo The web front end is evidently replaceable as you point out with things like Elk and Phanpy.

I haven't looked but I imagine the Mastodon backend does not at all assume a particular front end, and the Mastodon web app is written as if it is a 3rd party app.

Same is true for the mobile apps as well.

@ayo the only part of the frontend that a client doesn't replace is the OAuth pages. If you want to use Elk/Phanpy you'd need to add those.

@schizanon yes I found this too. I was thinking just to avoid forking Mastodon I will first create a custom CSS just to make that specific page look like Elk 😄 *and then try removing the rest of the Mastodon frontend.
