we’re having couscous aux sept legumes tonight and one of the legumes a kid picked out is a chayote. as my mom likes to say when serving dinner: I bet you’ve never had this combination before.

@dev @fernomac @ricci @regehr Well since you mention (elsewhere in this convo) buying tubs of ice cream, you were better situated with a Costco warehouse not 3 miles from UC Santa Cruz (which is where I gather you spent some time).

I spent ~hour yesterday fighting an issue with my C++ code, only to later figure out it's a possible GCC bug, because Clang accepts the same code.

The issue is that GCC does not permit a constrained type parameter in a template template parameter of an aliased template. See the simplified code with the issue.

A cursory search of GCC Bugzilla does not readily show any related bug. I'll look carefully but lemme know if this is a known bug (probably is). 🙏🏽

Has someone explored fully replacing the Mastodon frontend with another web app? I am going to try it soon but maybe someone did already. #askMastodon #askFedi

smurthys,
@smurthys@hachyderm.io avatar

@ayo I'm confused. Aren't elk and phanpy the kind of clients you're looking for?

smurthys,
@smurthys@hachyderm.io avatar

@ayo The web front end is evidently replaceable as you point out with things like Elk and Phanpy.

I haven't looked but I imagine the Mastodon backend does not at all assume a particular front end, and the Mastodon web app is written as if it is a 3rd party app.

Same is true for the mobile apps as well.

Remember:

There were possible crimes, but tax and reporting crimes are not election interference.

There is also a circular thing with Cohen and Pecker telling the court that they expected Trump to pay back the hush money payments.

If they expected to get paid back, it was a loan to Trump and not a contribution. Right?

smurthys,
@smurthys@hachyderm.io avatar

@Teri_Kanefield I'd think the loan would need to be on the campaign's books. A loan "agreement" would also need to be in place in some form (even if unwritten), but I'm sure the defense will establish that, but there has got to be some issue with an unpaid loan and avoided interest payments/accurual.

Back in the comfort of home after a rejuvenating 2-day trip.

Sadly, the main trails at the state park were closed due to recent rains, but a nearby town forest made up with its well designed and marked multi-use trails.

We hiked the entire trails, which was just 7kms but offered great nature. Also, you can see from the map why we were so turned around in the forest that we'd no clue where we were after just minutes inside.

A caterpillar with green, black, and brown strips on its back sitting on the back of a red flower. Blurry green vegetation in the background.

Some more pictures from the 2-day trip at a state park. 👆🏽

Not just wildflowers, lots of wild insects and animals too.

Picture 1: Shot from quite a distance.

3: See video 👇🏽 to truly appreciate the beauty of this caterpillar.

4: I don't know the kind of insect on the right, but it was stalking the caterpillar, which responded by just staying still. Somone, please help me make sense of the impasse these two creatures caused for themselves.

A brown lizard sitting on the ground with brown dirt and a small brown rock. Some twigs, dried leaves, and shoots of plants around.
A white hairy (but not furry) caterpillar on a tree trunk. Lots of brown dried leaves in the background.
A beige and white furry and thorny caterpillar on the ground with gold-brown colored sand. A bug with yellow and brown back, and brown legs, on the right facing the caterpillar.

Tell me if this is not the cutest caterpillar you have ever seen.

Back at the state park, a 3km evening hike on a trail that was right behind our campsite. Brilliant lake views (hard to capture in pictures) and as always, excellent wildlife.

Picture 3: Erased something from the picture for privacy.

Picture 4: The picture doesn't capture it, but the vultures are huge IRL. And I bungled the chance to get a closeup of one of the vultures that was pretty close to me. 🥺

EDIT: Added alt-text to pics.

Front view of a deep pink (almost light purple) flower. Petals look like frazzled hair. Fuzzy green vegetation in the background.
A long steel fishing pier in a lake. Green forest on the far side of the lake.
Seven black vultures on a pavement with some water. Two vultures on the left, group of five more on the right.

Two short hikes Thursday morning before leaving the state park. The second hike was on an ankle-bending rocky trail with steep gradients, not surprising because parts of it are popular for rock climbing and rappelling.

Incredible views of the forest, lake, and rocks. Decent cardio workout as well. 😉

Spotted a yellow-crowned night heron and a black rat snake on yesterday's neighborhood walk. (I think that's what they are, but open to being corrected.)

Saw them both within 100-150 ft of each other, on the 6th km of an otherwise uneventful 7.5km walk. 😀

Snake video 👇🏽 (none of my clients were able to attach both videos to this post).

Video of a grey heron sitting on a tree branch and then flying away towards a backyard, eventually settling down by a creek.

I focused more on experiencing the solar than taking pictures, but here are my pathetic-excuse-of-pictures at . It was partly cloudy but luckily enough breaks throughout at critical junctures. The clouds did add interesting dimension to the experience, like the accentuated blue.

1 Fully eclipsed sun through thin clouds
2 Same as 1 but no clouds
3 Ultrawide shot w a star usually visible only at night. Do you spot it?

(👇🏽 for pic 3 marked up)

A totally eclipsed sun through an opening in white clouds, in a blue sky
An ultrawide shot of a blue sky with fragmented thin white clouds and a totally eclipsed sun behind clouds.

smurthys,
@smurthys@hachyderm.io avatar

The ultrawide shot 👆🏽 marked up with a thin red circle around a star that is usually visible only at night. It got so dark at totality that we actually could see stars.

PS: I don't know how much of the original picture quality Mastodon/Fediverse preserves.

started cutting my hair in the early days of covid then

never stopped

best tools I've found:

Panasonic ER-GP80. Great range of combs, easily replaced blade cartridge, cordless. My hair is VERY thick and dense, this glides through it effortlessly

https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ER-GP80-Professional-Hair-Clipper/dp/B00KNCXFR0/

Adjustable tablet clamp for mounting a hand mirror to a light stand. Perfect way to place it at the exact right height and position you need. A good view behind your head takes out all the guesswork

I have written C# top-level code before, but I'm obviously suffering a "brain freeze" right now: Why does this simple top-level C# statement say "The name 'Console' does not exist in this context", even though I'm compiling with .NET 7.x and .NET 8 (well past .NET 5 that top-level statements need)? 😳

Console.WriteLine("hello world"); //System.Console works

.NET 8: https://dotnetfiddle.net/aAPvYU
.NET 7.0.105: https://sigcpp.godbolt.org/z/3v3Y1Ecbn

Someone, please, set me right. 🥺🙏🏽

smurthys,
@smurthys@hachyderm.io avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh Indeed. Neither .NET Fiddle nor Compiler Explorer support implicit usings. IIUC they'd have to explicitly disable implicit usings, and that perplexes me. But then maybe Implicit Usings is somehow VS specific and that's how they aren't in place. 🥺

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/tutorials/top-level-templates#implicit-using-directives

Too bad, I was hoping to make 101 course examples, and offer a playground, as simple as possible. But the ceremonial "using System;" line will have to get into code.

6.8km river walk on Tuesday on some new-to-us parts of the trail.

It was cloudy and windy (32+kmph, 20+mph), but it was great to see wildflowers blooming everywhere. The bluebonnets especially are having a great year.

I was lucky to get a sun break in the clouds just over a patch of bluebonnets. (1)

Also lucky to be able to get so close to the flowers (2, 3).

15.1km walk yesterday on parts of the trail where we'd biked before but hadn't walked. Lots of exciting sights and sightings. Even got to walk barefoot over the fall in shallow but brisk running water. 😃

The plan was to walk 16kms but shorted due to a closed stretch. The closed stretch did provide some excitement and anxiety. 👇🏽

And I think my watch has developed issues: shorted me 300m distance, and both BPM and calories seem a bit off. ☹️

A meandering river with wide lush green banks on either side, a bridge in the distance in the back, blue skies with a spattering of thin white clouds.
A white narrow metal rail bridge with a gravel trail leading to the bridge. Lush green grass on either side of the trail.
A white unlabeled map showing the trace of a walk in green. White text on black after the map with some stats of the walk.

The 15.1km river walk yesterday 👆🏽 brought both excitement and anxiety when we ran into a bobcat on the trail. 🐆

We first saw it ~25ft (8m) ahead of us. It retreated into the forest and we decided to proceed. But we soon turned back because the trail was very overgrown, and encountered the bobcat again. This time closer and for a prolonged time. It walked ahead of us for ~200ft (60m) and fortunately went back into the forest. 😰
