Our lawnmower's battery charger stopped working over the weekend. $200 for a new one, which is like 1/3 of a lawnmower. Ugh.

I ordered the weird screwdriver to open the case for $7, watched a 20 min YouTube with someone debugging a similar model. I was able to take it apart and solder back together a component that had come loose. 💅 It's been up and working for 20 minutes with no explosions or even bad smells.

Being willing to attempt to repair stuff is such a superpower. YouTube is amazing. ✌🏻

@PadraigOCinneide and the world need to buy less stuff and repair more! I’m learning to soldering circuit and repaired one of those speakers that read children stories if you put the little statue on it.

@PadraigOCinneide Not mechanically minded self took apart a Kitchen Aid mixer, cleaned out 40 yr old grease, put food grade grease in, reassembled with no parts left over, :-). Changed brushes. Because Youtube.

Thank you for the good news post of the day!

shadowplay_2112,

@PadraigOCinneide Same issue with an Audi Q7. Water coming into the passenger footwell. Rang up Audi dealership. 500€ to diagnose the problem, can’t say what the final cost is (obviously). Looked up YouTube, saw a video, 15mins and a screwdriver fixed it. I love YT!!

@PadraigOCinneide Let's not forget how great it is to be able to order parts!

I repaired my digital SLR with a part from Ebay (I was as surprised as anyone when it worked after I put it back together) and my dishwasher with a part from some random parts website.

In the pre-internet days I'd never have known what part I wanted, let alone been able to order them.

Vive_Levant,

@thomasbeagle @PadraigOCinneide I can strongly relate since I fixed a broken netatmo thermostat with a 2.08€ (shipping included) eBay ordered part while netatmo was asking 70€ + ups shipping cost.

@PadraigOCinneide YouTubers have helped me fix a lot of things from a microwave door to a lawnmower, and just prep for regular home improvement projects.

@PadraigOCinneide @feisty_lemming Really, it’s just such a rush when you figure out a problem and can fix it. I just love fixing things, the trickier the better. :blobcatcoffee:
