I'm trying to decide whether or not to stick with my current rsync based backup strategy now that I have a home lab or if I should use something like borg.

On one hand I know how to use rsync locally. On the other, I could do both my remote and my local backup with borg and just use one tool.

@thelinuxcast I'm in the process of reinstalling some machines. I don't really have time to do it all in one sitting so I started a Borg backup with an external usb disk. I like the "repo" nature of it. I can be lazy and still work with the system and update the backup again later if I've new files in my home. And eventually I'll do the wipe and fresh install. The UI is very straightforward. And it's clear when I last backed up etc. So it's a definite improvement on rsync that way. It's fast too

@thelinuxcast I recently moved from rsync-with-hardlinks to borg. It's faster and handles its own encryption so can use an untrusted remote filesystem.

My initial reservation was against extra backup software that might not be available to restore after a disaster, but borg and borgmatic are included in the standard Fedora repos now.

@thelinuxcast rsync user@path.to.remote:/path/from/root/to/location/on/host/

@10leej yes, Josh, I already use that. I'm just trying to decide if I want to move to borg or not.

@thelinuxcast ah. I only use borg to handle my offsite snapshots.
For desktop to homelab I make use of rsync and let the server use btrfs snapshots.

@10leej I'll probably keep doing that too. But I know borg can do local stuff too. Would be kinda nice to just have Vorta do both at once and be done with it. And it'd be easier to automate.

@thelinuxcast thankfully Vorta can do that!
