i know artists like to make fast/slow versions of their songs but can they start doing versions of their songs at 10% of the speed?

i want to hear pop songs turn into haunting whale songs

@aen_the_acolyte, I guess the technical answer is :neocat_sign_no: because recording at 10x sample rate would require a much faster machine. Audio slowed down digitally to 10% would be capped at 2.4 or 4.8 kHz which is like MP3 at 8 kb/s or worse.

@cnx @aen_the_acolyte jokes on you, audio is often recorded at insane sampling rates, sometimes up to 768kHz. Just makes mastering so much easier and also gets rid of aliasing.

Thanks, @newt, TIL. 768 kHz seems insane for realtime processing, do they use separate channels for storing samples and playback to the singer’s headphone? Cc: @aen_the_acolyte

@cnx @aen_the_acolyte possibly? Depends on the studio.

@cnx @aen_the_acolyte also no, it's not insane. With 32 bit samples, it's only something like 3 megabits per channel per second. Pretty mediocre.
